Black screen and very slow graphics

Hey,

So I updated to Yosemite cause I thought that maybe fix my problem. But it didn't.

Still have the same problem on startup. I get a black screen right after the apple logo loading screen.

When booted in safe mode, graphics are very very very slow. See video I recorded with my phone:

I'm beginning to think it has something to do with a graphic driver or my video card.

Anyone got any ideas?

If you were experiencing the same issue before installing it, it likely didn't make things worse, but you should go ahead and uninstall it like this:

Boot into single user mode and type in the following commands:

  • mount -uw /
  • rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext
  • rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches

Then boot into Safe Mode and reboot a few times and see if that message goes away in verbose boot. It should also get rid of those 'SuperIODevie: [FATAL]' errors. Let me know how everything works once you've gotten that done.

Yes, I did. The quick test came out clean. The extended tesr either took very long or froze so I never finished it and intervened. The clean quick test is also the reason I'm thinking it's not a hardware problem. But it could be.

I was doing some gaming some time before all of this happened. Is something like the game overloading my graphic gard possible? Cause I'm 90% sure it's something with the graphic card. Just don't know what.

Okay, I'm going to try and walk you through a recovery installation. This will leave all of your files and data just how it is, while reinstalling only the operating system. Here's the procedure:

  • Shut down your MacBook
  • Power on your MacBook as the second you hear the startup sound, press and hold Command + R
  • Let go of the keys once the Apple logo is displayed
  • Shortly, recovery prompt should appear
  • Pick whichever option is given to 'Install OS X'
  • Pick your existing disk to install to. Again, your files will not be touched.
  • Let it complete the installation and try to boot normally when it's completed

Let me know how everything works once that's all done. It's probably going to take the better part of an hour, possibly more depending on your internet connection speed. Hope this all helps!

Hey,

I had actually tried that before. But just to be sure I tried it again. I followed every step you described, step by step. The OS reinstalled without damaging or touching any of my files. But also without fixing the issue. It's still there.

In safe mode, or recovery mode the MBP workes just fine. But the moment it's started up normally something goes wrong. If only we knew what proccesses run in the background at that time that normally don't run in safe mode.

Anyway, I'm very thankful for your help. Seriously, you are really helping out alot. Hope you know any further steps? I guess the genius bar is coming closer and closer.
