Unable to send/receive SMS on iPad Air with iOS 8.1?

I downloaded the 8.1 update this morning for my iPad Air and my iPhone 5s. After doing so, I was prompted on my MacBook Air to input a messaging verification code on my phone in order to enable SMS messaging on my laptop. I have not, however, been able to set my iPad up similarly to send/receive SMS. I have tried signing out of iMessage and signing back in, doing a hard reset, and turning Messages on and off with no success. Whenever I attempt to send a message to a non-iPhone user, it will not allow me to send, saying that the user is not registered with iMessage. How can I fix this?

iPad, iOS 8, iPad Air

You imply it will not work on an pad, but Apple says that it does. I have a Verizon cellular acct on this Ipad, so it does have a phone number associated with the device.

The iPad does support SMS relay, but only in conjunction with an iPhone. Regardless of your interpretation as to what Apple means, your iPad cannot send SMS messages, despite having a phone number associated with its cellular connection. It simply cannot send SMS messages, period, unless you have an iPhone that it can connect to.

Question 1.

I just upgraded from 4s to 6. I am having issues with the imessage on my 4s though. Out of about 50 people, I can only imessage one of them, I have tried resetting it, turning imessage on and off, signing in and out, and restoring it. Nothing works, I can still only imessage one person. Please help?

Question 2.

I want to be able to forward SMS to my ipad Air and 4s as well. The 4s comes up but I never recieve any code to enter. The ipad air doesnt even come up as an option to forward sms to. Please help with this too. Thank you!

1) If you upgraded to an iPhone 6, then your old iPhone 4S no longer has service on it. In order to receive iMessages to your phone number, the phone must send an SMS to activate iMessage. Since it no longer has service, it won't be able to do that. Basically, since that phone is no longer active, you can send and receive iMessages from your email address, but not your phone number.

2) Same as above. Since you cannot receive iMessages to your phone number on your old iPhone, you also cannot forward SMS to it. You should be able to on the iPad, though, as it does not need to send an SMS to activate iMessage. Is your phone number listed on your iPad under Settings > Messages > Send & Receive?

1. Yes, on the 4s I am iMessaging from my email only but it will only iMessage one person out the 50 others with an iPhone which is odd. It has been doing this all day.
.

2. Yes my phone number and email are listed under my iPad send and receive. I am able to send and receive iMessages. However, when I try to select "Forward sms messages" on my iPhone 6, only my iPhone 4s shows up but even then it does not provide a code. My iPad air doesn't even show up on devices even though it is synced with my iPhone 6. I am really struggling to figure out the 2 issues.

UPDATE

I woke up this morning and magically I can now iMessage everyone with an iPhone so 1) is solved!!!!

However, when I try to forward SMS to another device (iPad air 1st gen, iPhone 4s) only my 4s shows up. My iPad air 1st gen is only wifi and not 3g. Does it have to have 3g/4g in order to forward sms text messages to it? Why isn't it coming up as an option? Thank you again for all your help.
