Unable to send/receive SMS on iPad Air with iOS 8.1?

I downloaded the 8.1 update this morning for my iPad Air and my iPhone 5s. After doing so, I was prompted on my MacBook Air to input a messaging verification code on my phone in order to enable SMS messaging on my laptop. I have not, however, been able to set my iPad up similarly to send/receive SMS. I have tried signing out of iMessage and signing back in, doing a hard reset, and turning Messages on and off with no success. Whenever I attempt to send a message to a non-iPhone user, it will not allow me to send, saying that the user is not registered with iMessage. How can I fix this?

iPad, iOS 8, iPad Air

Thanks, I need however a code from my iPad and iMac. How do I get these (IOS 8.1 and OS 10.10)?

Assuming that you have an iPhone capable of supporting SMS relay, your iPhone's settings for Messaging need to include an email address in the "You can be reached by iMessage at ..." and this same email needs to be enabled on your Mac and iPad's setting for Messaging. I think once you establish the connection you may be able to remove the use of the email in your messaging settings, but it doesn't hurt to leave it in place.

GOT IT TO WORK. I had the same email addresses but no code. So I turned on Wi-Fi on both devices, connected them to the same network, and then I got the code to appear on my IPad.

Hi there, I have an iPad 4 and can't seem to get the code to appear on my iPad after enabling Text Forwarding on my iPhone 5. I even powered down the iPad, enabled Text Forwarding then turned my iPad on (your reply to The original poster suggested the idea that had to be turned off).

Any idea why I'm unable to get that code to appear on my iPad 4?

I haven't got upgraded my iMac to OS X but will do so soon. Wanted to get the iPhone and iPad both running iOS 8.1 first.

Thanks for any thoughts.

All devices must have iOS 8.1 or OSX 10.10 Yosemite

You must have iPhone

All devices must have wifi turn-on and have same SSID (in multi wifi environment)

SMS forwarding must be turn on on iPhone FOR EACH DEVICE (Setting-Messages-SMS forwarding). If you can`t see all devices, turn off and then on iMessages on this devices.

After you turn-on SMS forwarding on iPhone for selected device, verification code appears on target device

Yeah, I'm having the same issue as well. All my devices 'see' one another, they're on the same wifi network, but no code shows up on my MacBook Pro, or iPad Mini (I have an iPhone 6 Plus btw). Whats up with this apple? Your software quality control has gone down hill over the past year or so. These are normally 'Microsoft' type issues, not apple issues. What ever happened to "It just works!"...??????

What exactly do you mean by "see one another"? There is no need to pair devices via Bluetooth if that's what you're thinking.

Please check the article I linked above to ensure you have the right hardware and you've done the right steps. Also see my post above about using the same email address for all devices in the "You can be reached at .." settings for Messages and FaceTime. I had zero problems, so for me it did "just work".

AAll I meant was that they recognize each other connectivity wise. I know I don't have to pair them either. I read the article, and yes I have the required hardware, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered posting at all. The stupid code isn't sending, that's the issue. Don't naje this harder then it needs to, I just need to know if it's something on apple's end or mine. Oh and before you ask, I even did the 10 cent tech support advice and restarted all my iOS and Yosemite MacBook Pro.

I Have been unable to get this to work. Both my macbook air and mt ipad have two email addresses under iMessage. Could this be the problem? One is my Apple ID and the other is an ICloud address. Should I delete the icloud address from iMessage? Should I add the telephone number associated with mt ipad?
