Amazon.com Rewards card (Visa issued by Chase) not supported by Apple Pay?

Is it just me or is this working as intended?

@ShadowX, I've come to exactly the same conclusion. Amazon.com Visa for stuff bought on Amazon, Citi Double Cash for everything else with no limits on the rewards and no annual fee.

Considering how much I spend at Whole Foods every month, I've been missing out big time. Amazon gives me 1% cash back while Citi Double Cash will give me 2% cash back.

In a way, I'm grateful that Amazon.com Visa wasn't part of the Apple Pay deal. I got a chance to rethink my rewards card strategy. I was losing a ton of money by using my Amazon.com Visa for everything.

Umm..I just Tweeted @askciti (Citi Bank's Twitter support) and they let me know that the Double Cash card only earns cash, not what they call "Thank You" points. And, you can only use "Thank You" points at Amazon. So, if I want a card that I can use the points at Amazon, I'd have to get a different card.

They pointed me to this link: citi.us/11GUKob

I was hoping it worked more like Discover - with them, each $1 cash back you earn gives you $1 to spend on Amazon.

I understand that I can simply get a check and then use that to buy stuff, but I prefer being able to use my points directly at Amazon checkout. I realize I may not get as many points, but if I get cash back via check, I'd end up putting it in the bank and forgetting about it. Whereas, when I have points I can spend at Amazon checkout, I feel like I'm getting something for free. And, more importantly, so does my wife. So, she doesn't care what I buy if I use points. 😀

Hmmm, I have an interesting choice now. I have a Discover that I use everywhere but Amazon, and an Amazon Visa I use there. I have three other cards I don't use, but they're all compatible with Apple Pay. I was going to see about getting that Citi Double Cash, but you bring up a good point. The Citi I already have lets me use my points to pay on Amazon like my two primary cards do (I just learned this thanks to your post), and at this point my Apple Pay purchases will likely be small enough that an extra 1% is insignificant. I think I just decided on using my Citi ThankYou as my primary Apple Pay card. I'll revisit the situation when more merchants accept it and more cards are likely compatible.

Discover has Tweeted that they are talking with Apple about getting their cards on Apple Pay. So, hopefully your Discover card will soon be able to be used on Apple Pay. When this happens, I may end up getting a Discover card myself to use with Apple Pay.

All-

After following this thread, and a similar one on Amazon.com, I emailed Amazon about my dissatisfaction today. I received the following response, which bodes well for everyone. Perhaps they are hearing our pleas (my original email below also)...

Comments:I am a loyal and, usually, very happy Amazon customer. I value your website and have seen Amazon as my first, main retail source for years. For more than 5 years, I have also regarded my Chase Amazon Visa as my main purchasing tool. I wish I could continue that, but I am now considering canceling that card due to my EXTREME dissatisfaction with Chase and Amazon for deciding not to allow the card to work with Apple Pay.

Amazon's commitment is supposedly to their customers and convenience, but the choice to exclude the Amazon Visa from Apple Pay come across as petty corporate rivalry, and does not stand well with me or countless other Amazon customers. I am suggest you Google the topic to see the outpouring of frustration, all directed at Amazon, and Chase to a lesser degree. I hope your company reconsiders this regressive, consumer-harming policy and join Apple Pay to extend your customers' purchasing options and continued loyalty.

Truly.

I spoke to Amazon as well and they said that they have had many queries and so believe they will be adding their card to the list.

If you want to help encourage them, please turn your card over and call the number and tell them so.

Apparently your calls and votes count so don't leave it at just looking at this site.

Call them and ask that they include your input as a suggestion so that it means something.

Subject: Please add Apple Pay to the Amazon Rewards VISA card

Hi Jeff,

I love Amazon - we literally use it every week. But I was disappointed to find out that Amazon is not allowing the Amazon Rewards VISA card to participate in Apple Pay.

Because of the enhanced security of Apple Pay, I’m going to have to find a different credit card if this isn’t fixed soon. I’ve had to update my credit card information for all the merchants I use twice in the last year due to the Target and Home Depot breaches. I’m sure these breaches will only continue. With the security of Apple Pay, I wouldn’t ever have to do this again.

Please reconsider your stance on this important issue. You’ve made a commitment to your customers, and ensuring they remain secure through support of technologies like Apple Pay is an important part of that, regardless of any competitive advantages you may see in refusing to support an Apple technology.

A loyal customer,

Ricky
