FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

happygodavid,

I'm frankly surprised they suspect a hardware issue. Also a bit disappointed as this is obviously a software bug in Yosemite. In my case and I'm sure most others, this issue didn't exist prior to installing Yosemite. I really wish Apple would roll out a fix for this. Best of luck to you and I hope your Mac and the rest of ours get's squared away soon.

Well, I have the same issue with my early 2011 MBP. I have been following this thread, with maybe another data point here to offer. I have been wanting Continuity to work, so I did the surgery and updated my airport BT/Wi-Fi card to the MBP 2012 BT 4.0 version, then applied the automatic terminal script to change the file parameters to recognize the new card for Continuity. I am excited to report that Continuity is working like a champ now. I am not excited to report that the audio FT calling was not resolved. There is still an intermittent clicking and faded sound issue when addressing calls. So, not sure what this means as far as the older BT 2.1 card in combination with the Yosemite software being the culprit. Any ideas?

Alq, I agree with you completely and have my doubts as to whether or not this will resolve the issue. Since the Genius Bar offered to replace my logic board for free, I figured I had nothing to lose. My thinking is that if the logic board replacement doesn't resolve the issue, they will escalate the issue to higher powers that can fix the bug (assuming that's what it is, and I think that's the case).

I just came from the Apple store for an unrelated issue, and asked the technician about this popping issue with face time. He ran a diagnostic and we tested it at the bar, he said that it was a hardware issue. He quoted me about $50 placement for the speaker.

Heh, I would not waste 50 bucks for that, unless they are willing to pay that back if the problems is not fixed. Two indicators why it most probably is not a hardware issue. First, this issue has risen quite suddenly simultaneously to a lot of users, which would indicate a software bug rather than hardware failure. Second, it is rare that a hardware failure that requires replacement part would repair itself, and with this issues a reboot solves the problem for awhile.

I really would have liked to see that diagnostic test result, did it really suggest that there is a hardware problem or was that fix solution just a random thought by the technician who had no clue what is the problem. It's horrible practice to offer solutions when the problem has not been even identified.

No, I wasn't going to have the the repair done unless it affected the entire computer. Since FaceTime is the only app having issues, I am not inclined at this point to throw money at the problem.

In the meantime, as a workaround, I've noticed that having iTunes playing music at the time I make (or receive) a FaceTime call will result in no popping noise.

Well, I just got my early 2011 MBP back after having the logic board replaced. As I suspected, it did not resolve the issue. So now they are going to replace both speakers. I figure I'd just cover every possible base with the Genius Bar since they are offering to replace parts free of charge (well, I paid for a repair a few months ago, and they are including all of this in that repair, even though it was outside the warranty for the repair, so that's nice of them.) Eventually, they'll figure it out.

AppleCare escalated it to their engineers, who are telling the rep I'm working with that it's a hardware issue. I find it somewhat dubious since it only affects FaceTime (?). Although considering Apple has replaced the logic board on this early 2011 MacBook Pro twice, I shouldn't be surprised.

I am planning on getting a new laptop this year with my tax return, I doubt I'll be buying another MacBook.
