Health app hanging - Possible to wipe/reset?

I'm getting a hang on iOS 8.0.x and 8.1 when I try to access any data in the Health app. The charts don't show any data at all, and "Show all data" hangs with a spinning circle, and the iPhone starts getting hot. I left it 5+ minutes, no data appears.

Periodically I will get "Show all data" to show a bit of data, what I see is tons of duplicated records going back many weeks, so I have a guess that a Withings bug inserted tons and tons of duplicative data into Health which is now causing me issues.

I have tried hitting "Edit" and "Clear All", but nothing seems to happen.

Anyone else seeing similar? I'd be happy to wipe all of the data and start fresh if that were possible.

On the Withings side, I turned off Health synchronization and asked it to remove all data, but this was not completed. I also tried turning off Withings ability to sync from within Health, hoping this would offer a "Turn off and delete?" prompt, without success.

iPhone 5s, now on iOS 8.1.0, problems started on iOS 8.0.2 when I first attempted to sync Withings data into Health.

Interestingly I am having the exact same issue - also a Withings user. I'm sure its an Apple problem rather than Withings. I have even removed the Withings app which again offers to remove Health data - but then doesn't. It's all still there. The whole Health app is riddled with bugs, freezing screens, sometimes displaying the items on the dashboard but other times not. If you try and export all data it crashes too. I hoped 8.1 was going to fix all this but its no different to before. I hope they get round to sorting this soon as its currently a disaster.

I did it 3 weeks ago, and I am happy for it : Since that, Health has been responsive.

But I still had some duplicate datas coming from Withings.

When the last relasee of withings has been available few days ago, I stopped the suync with Health to delete again all the datas coming from this app.

And since I restarted it the sync, eveything is fine.

For me, problem solved.

It will only work until you get a certain amount of data in there and then you will be back to square one.

The interesting thing is that this problem only effects a minority of users that are really into health and have multiple services writing to the health database. People who only have the health app tracking their steps from the A8 (which is the majority of users) have no problems at all. Therefore I think it is unlikely that this crappy software is ever fixed. Its really unfortunate the Apple devs who made this software are not into health or these bugs would have been found ages ago. Same is true for tech bloggers.

Just confirming that the reset worked for me too. Here's what I did:

1. Made an unencrypted backup via iTunes.

2. Hit "Restore Backup" and choose the recent unencrypted backup.

3. Secure deleted the unencrypted backup ASAP, because ick.

The whole process too about 10 minutes, and no Health data was backed up or restored, so I finally got a clean slate as far as the Health app goes.

Note: Contrary to some statements above, I didn't lose any other data, and I only needed to Restore Backup (not Restore iPhone).

I cannot confirm this. I have just backed up my iPhone 6 and then restored the backup. The Health App is still hanging. It still shows more than 500 MB in used memory.

I didn't loose any data either but I had to copy all photos again.

Glad to have found this thread, not happy that there isn't an easy fix. I have 1.6GB of data from Withings Pulse, Scale and BP monitor.

Switching off the sync in Withings doesn't ask if I want to delete from Health. There's no opportunity to turn off data elements in Health - when I touch the slider, it moves very slightly, then after a couple of minutes it moves the rest of the way across. However, when I exit Health and go back in, the slider is back in the ON position.

Looks like I will need to try the unencrypted backup approach, but I know that (amongst other things) it will clear stored passwords.

Watching the thread and hoping, but not expecting...

It works !

Health App was not showing any data for the last 3 months and did not investigated the topics as I was mainly using Runstatic and Withings Apps instead, but I thought it was time to get it right. Then I try to reset setting => still not working; then restore twice => still not working; then I found this post then I:

1) unencrypted back-up

2) restore from unencrypted backup

3) check that it is Health Apps is working => yes health is now working on my iphone 6 !!

4) encrypted my back-up to fulfil my company security mandatory rules

At the end after one full night of investigations, resets, restores, downloads, forums..... it works and I am quite happy.

Many thanks to this community.

ℹ For any user having this issue in Fall 2015 or later (and updated to iOS 9.0 or 9.1.x) there is resolution

Background: I started using Health on my iPhone 6 and in September I upgraded to the iPhone 6s Plus. I didn't realize the process you had to go through to transfer an encrypted backup to transfer the data. So, when I upgraded, I just used iCloud and continued to use the Health app. After some issues with the phone (longer story), I returned the iPhone 6s Plus and went back to my iPhone 6 and afterwards the Health app database was corrupted; I cannot recall how long after reverting back to the iPhone 6 that I realized the Health app was corrupted. Unfortunately, the last backup when Health was not corrupted was overwritten.

Summary of Health App Issues: (1) Health app would not show any previous data; (2) Health app would not log any steps or save any manual input activity; (3) Health app dashboard would only show three activity cards - Flights Climbed, Steps, and Walking + Running Distance; (5) Health app would not allow me to delete data under the activity card but the data itself still resided on the iPhone [I know this because I used a third-party app to extract the data]

Unsuccessful Solutions that were tried over 3 month period: (1) "Soft" resets - alone; (2) Restoring from iCloud or restoring from iTunes - alone; (3) removing the Health activity cards from the Dashboard and closing and reopening the application; (4) Reset All settings; (5) Remove all applications that feed into Health app

ℹ RESOLUTION: Using Hook69's method + some additional steps to resolve your Health App Problems

  1. [PRE-STEP] - Use a third party app to extract the information from the Health App database; I was successful using QS Access.
  2. [PRE-STEP] - Update all apps from the App Store but do not run an iOS update yet (if needed)
  3. [PRE-STEP] - Do an iCloud back up ---> This becomes your safety net if the follow steps don't work and you want to go back to Step #2.
  4. [PRE-STEP] - Delete each application that feeds into Health or reads Health data; select the option to delete the data that feeds into Health.
  5. [PRE-STEP] - Go into iPhone settings and then Privacy to turn off every action that impacts the Health App [ (a) Health and (b) Motion & Fitness ]
  6. [PRE-STEP] - Go back into the Health App and turn off each activity card that is shown on the dashboard. If the option is available to delete the data associated with them, do so. However, I did not have the option despite the data being on the phone.
  7. [PRE-STEP] - Quit the Health App
  8. [PRE-STEP] - IF AVAILABLE, update to iOS 9.2 (or the latest version)
  9. Now follow Hook69's steps #1, #2, and #3
  10. If Health App is not working, repeat PRE-STEPs #4 and #5 to ensure all apps that feed into Health are removed from the iPhone and all settings to "activate" Health are turned off.
  11. [REPEAT THIS STEP 3X] - Hold the Home and Sleep/Awake button for 30 seconds until the iPhone powers off and on. Do not input your passcode until you've done the 3 resets
  12. Now follow Hook69's step #3; the Health app should open with a blank dashboard - THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE
  13. Close Health and reopen to ensure no activity cards reappear in the dashboard
  14. If you exported data, manually input the data points into Health <----- Yes, that could be long or annoying but at least your app is working. Pay a kid (yours, niece/nephew, siblings...) to do this step.
  15. Select which Health activity cards you want to reappear on dashboard
  16. Reinstall your third-party fitness and health applications and log-in.
  17. Perform an encrypted iTunes backup, and optionally an iCloud backup, if you want to save this as your new Day Zero

⚠ I'm electing not to reactive automatic feeds into Health. So, I cannot comment if Health becomes corrupted again by linking third-party applications.

⚠ I'm electing not to utilize Motion and Fitness tracking. So I cannot comment if Health becomes corrupted again by using that feature.

➕ I also use Lumen Trails to save the critical data

➕ I will do Health application exports routinely (maybe every 30-45 days)

➕ I will perform encrypted iTunes backups every 1-2 weeks
