Random Blue Screen Crash with 5S and iOS 8.1

Since upgrading to iOS 8.0 my iPhone 5S randomly gets blue screens and then crashes and goes into a loop of boot up, blue screen, reboot, blue screen, reboot...etc. My 5S did this again today when during my upgrade to iOS 8.1 via USB and I was forced to do a factory restore on it. The blue screen is still occurring after the restore and 8.1 upgrade. Is this a known issue? I was hoping this was going to get fixed with 8.1 but unfortunately, it doesn't look like it has.

See if this recall website works for you. I don't know if it has expired.

When my phone got to this point I could rarely get it booted back up. At

one point, I was able to keep it on long enough to email myself a

diagnostics test from Apple. They told me I could go into the store and get

the battery replaced for $79. But when I went into the store, it wouldn't

boot past the blue screen, so they didn't even try to replace the battery.

They told me again I could buy a new iphone for $269. Ultimately, I went

HTC.

HI BricoleATX,

Thanks for replying. I don't think my phone had battery issue since it didn't give any signal for that. i Already scheduled an appointment next tuesday, but after hearing your experience. i guess they would just tell me to get new phone. Actually this is the second phone Since the first one had some issue with the usb port, and I just used this phone since May. and another problem occurred again. I am so disappointed with Apple right now.

Hi Papapishu,

I have tried the method i mentioned on my Dec 4's post, and my iPhone has been without blue screen saga for more than 24 hrs now. So far so good. Will post again after 1 week. And, i recalled i did deleted all my apps on my mac just to create more harddisk space before my blue screen saga started. This "apps out of syn" could really be the cause for iPhone 5S to show blue screen as the phone is subjected to looping and looping. My spare iPhone 5C does not have any issue at all.

Anyway, hopefully this is the issue that cause the blue screen as suggested by you. If it is, Apple should do something by now...is taking freaking long!

Thanks for advising Papaishu, else my iPhone may end up as a relic in my store room. I nearly switch to Sony Xperia Z3... 🙂

Those with blue screen, you may want to give it a go as what Papapishu has suggested. No harm trying.

Cheers!

UPDATE: I went to Apple store two weeks ago, and as BricoleATX said, Apple would not fix this issue, but they would replace you a new iphone. The problem was diagnosed as the usb port was broken and some short of hardware problem. Unfortunately, my phone was out of warranty two week before the phone had problem, so I had to pay $269 + tax = approximately $300 which is the replacement phone fee. I thought it was not worth it, thus I decided to buy an iphone 6. So far, the iphone 6 is great and has no sign of blue screen or any error after updating to iOS 8.1.2.

I see that many people having the same issue, and I believe that it is so frustrating and gives us headaches. What I suggest right now is that if your phone is still in warranty, bring it to Apple store and they will replace you a brand new phone. In order to give them evidence/ proof of the problem, you should use other devices such as ipad or another phone to record what happen to your phone, so they will not give you the reason that "I currently do not see any thing happen to your phone, so please come back again if the issue continues to happen." (Apple refused to replace my aunt a new iphone although her phone was still in warranty when her iphone 5S had broken lines on screen. And even she made appointment, they asked her to come back next time if the problem occurred again. The next time, she came with pictures of the broken lines appeared on the screen, so they replaced her a new iphone). I recorded the moment of my iphone 5S automatically restarted itself with blue screen for more than 5 mins, so they had no reason to ask me to come again. Good luck and hope your phones would get fixed/ replaced.

I had this problem happen to me. It wasn't immediately after upgrading to iOS 8, but it never happened before either. There were no recent apps installed. The only thing I did differently was to leave the phone on the charger overnight versus the 1 hour or so I typically charge it. I usually let the battery drain to near 0 on a regular basis. It blue screened in the middle of the night while on the charger.

I attempted to do a factory reset/restore via Itunes. I kept getting error code 40 or other similar errors partway through the restore. I left the phone sit a few hours, then the restore worked. However it blue screened again very shortly thereafter. After doing this a few times, I got the phone to go on an endless blue screen reboot/cycle. I decided to let it sit and completely drain the batteries (which it did overnight).

The next morning I was able to plug it into my PC, do the complete factory reset/restore without an issue. Several hours later it is still working - but lets just say I am not very confident. The one constant was that the battery was being charged, or plugged into iTunes with this happened with a battery that was at or near 100%. Doing this from a completely drained battery worked and no issues so far.

All of the solutions - change USB cable, port - even different PC didn't work for me. The only thing that did work was to allow the battery to drain 100% and then do a the factory restore/reset. I will keep an eye out if this happens again and if it is when the battery is fully charged. But I was almost ready to bring this into service - drain your batteries and try to restore multiple times...I was suprised the first time it restored was after about 5-10 repeated tries.

I just started having this same problem about three days ago. It happened one night and I got it to work and then yesterday it was fine. Today, it's been doing this cycle all morning. Very upset as this is not how I wanted to spend the holidays. Tomorrow, I will take it to an apple store but my closest one is over an hour and a half away. Luckily my phone is still under warranty so hopefully they can fix it or get me a new phone but I'm extremely disappointed with Apple and that they haven't come out with a fix for this yet. Not okay. I may have to become a Samsung customer if they don't fix my phone.

It doesn't appear to be a software issue. I went to the Apple Store and they tried, unsuccessfully to restore the phone. Another rep looked at it and said it looked like a bad logic board - which could mean the board itself, a chip or bad memory. Either way it was not serviceable. I always equated Apple with quality. Should a phone suffer logic board issues after a year of use? No. The sad thing is that I am stuck with having to pay $269 dollars since I am still another year from the end of my contract. I think apple should have a 1 year warranty for entire phone, and then an additional year for internal (i.e. not button related) parts that cannot be damaged under normal wear and tear use.

Ironically the rep said that he had never seen a problem like mine before. The girl next to me had an iphone 5s also, who also needed a new phone due to a 'hardware' issue although she had 2 weeks left on her warranty. The rep even said he is a little concerned about his equipment.
