System is running our of application memory after yosemite install

Me too. I agree with Roostertails. There are another anomalies (related or not) that I notice with IMAP accounts, which leads me to believe that Mail has flaws still. I believe that Apple is aware of several 'memory leak' issues at this time and will soon address them, possibly in an update or a new version. Overall, this version of Yosemite seems stable.

My attempted fixes so far:

1. In previous posts, described settings that work best for me using IMAP accounts in Mail. I have not had an issue, but have been taking no chances, leaving apps open.
2. Close unused apps on my Mac Pro, MacBook Pro (which has previously gobbled up 16GB RAM pretty quickly) until the solutions are available. Note that these are older machines and not as well supported as new ones. Certain features of newer machines no longer work for me (e.g., AirDrop). Otherwise OK, though.
3. Using Memory Clean.app to both monitor, scrub and free 'inefficiently used' RAM.

My own observation is that Apple Mail was a big culprit [memory leak]; secondary culprit was the "secureserver.net" servers from GoDaddy. Once I got rid of these--totally--by moving to Office 365 servers, and using Outlook for Mac (which is what I started with anyway) all was well. Office 365 Mail using EAS which itself is some modification of MAPI. These are two protocols that are generally acknowledged to be a bit better than POP and IMAP. So, my email is now on Office 365, which works on EAS, and all is well. Not a single problem once I moved over.

I'm not a huge fan of Microsoft, since I moved away from PC onto Mac in the first place! But, Outlook is significantly more business-like than Apple Mail, and at least in the case of EAS protocol it all works now...

MacBook Pro Retina 15" late 2013 running Yosemite 10.10.3 with 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16Gb RAM.

Ever since I installed Yosemite I have had chronic crashing, always due to running out of Application Memory. Activity Monitor shows the most recent crash with Firefox using 54.03Gb of memory, 51.77Gb of it compressed, this is usually the scenario, where Firefox (or Chrome or even Safari) overloads and the system completely craps out. I get a force quit applications window that shows all apps paused due to lack of application memory.

On Mavericks my standard user set of apps was Mail, Firefox, Dashlane, Daylite, Spam Sieve. Firefox occasionally crashed but nothing like this. I posted to another forum and was advised to kill off Clean My Mac, WD Software, Memory Clean and to remove Adware. So I did. I've kept the WD MyCloud software which I am using for a back up disk, but removed all other pieces of their software. I've been just letting the system run to see if this improved anything and it has essentially done nothing. The problem continues unabated.

I have restarted with SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION + POWER all together then released, then powered on again. I have reset PRAM. REPEATEDLY. I have restarted from Recovery Mode and run Disk Utility extensively - both repaired permissions as well as repaired disk.

I'm at a loss and getting quite aggravated. I"d appreciate any other innovative thoughts on this.

My useage has not changed appreciably, however my MBP's ability to function clearly has been impaired.

Is there a fix for Yosemite coming out to address this? Something's definitely awry with the way that RAM memory is allocated and managed.

My MacPro with 64 GB of RAM now regularly runs out of memory and can only be force restarted. Force quitting all the apps does no good. This MacPro, with 64 GB of memory, just freezes (usually it's in the morning after no activity for 12 hours).

This just started in early July, 2015. No issues up to now.

About to update to 10.10.4 to see if that helps.

Me too. I agree with Roostertails. There are another anomalies (related or not) that I notice with IMAP accounts, which leads me to believe that Mail has flaws still. I believe that Apple is aware of several at this time and will soon address them. Overall this version of Yosemite seems otherwise stable.

While I do not have an exact answer for your issue, I will say that:

1. The app Memory Clean is a good way to monitor the problem. You can also consult Activity>Memory pressure statistics page or put the RAM in the Dock Display to monitor the issue. Memory Clean has a feature that scrubs the excess bits out of RAM as they accumulate which helped me.
2. Mail has been (by me on a MacPro and several others in this thread) known to be a cause in earlier versions of Mac OS X Yosemite.
3. So far in OS X 10.10.4, I haven't seen the issue on my new MacBook Pro (MBP) 11,2.

Same problem here, just started today. 2013 Trash Can Mac Pro running 10.10.4, with 32gb of RAM.

Activity monitor shows iTunes 12.2.1 using 70gb+ of memory, and it is (paused) in the Force Quit window. Mail was also (paused) but didn't show abnormal memory usage. I force quit Mail, but iTunes is still unresponsive, it won't let me "Resume"

As it appears there are no solutions to this problem I'm just adding my voice to the list of dissatisfied users who find this problem unacceptable and am baffled that this apparently has been a problem going back at least 9 months and no solution offered from Apple.

Wiped a Mac Mini 14 days ago and unfortunately installed Yosemite. Never opened Mail and I have the same issue.

Simply complaining here to fellow users without much detail probably will not help too much to get an immediate fix of your issues. No diagnostic info means that few people are going to help on a user-user basis (if that is actually what you want). Possible ways you can proceed:

• You can submit feedback to Apple's monitored site. This is a more direct way to let Apple know than posting here, although some tech reps from Apple do hang here... www.apple.com/feedback
• If under Applecare, bring in to Apple Store.
• Call for Support (Applecare also helps in this regard).
• Post your specifics to these pages here: how often you get the failure, what apps are open at the time (Activity Monitor), what OS, etc.
• List the steps taken on a new thread you start.
• Please try some things others may suggest (including me) and post back. Without specifics it's simply to general a complaint to be responded to.

Some preliminary steps you can take are posted on this thread already. You could list your results instead of just adding your voice to the complaints. Summarizing the troubleshooting steps posted here and elsewhere (those I took, others may have some more):

1. Replicate in a controlled test. Clear the issue first by clearing out the memory allocation (restart).
2. Restart in safe mode.
3. Look at the list of items that may be opening at log-in (System Preferences>Users>Your User name>Login Items). Remove anything suspicious that you see starting up an app.
4. Restart as a test user (create a new user or from an admin that's infrequently used).
5. Open one app at a time until you determine the app(s) that fill memory to overflowing. Hint: Memory clean shows real time memory accumulation.

I simply posted what helped me. Feel free to do the same when you find the bug that's causing it. In my case, I've been free of this issue. Knock on wood.

As I said, I'm simply adding my voice to the list. I'm well aware of how to troubleshoot and how to contact/deal with Apple support, if I thought it would do any good. In this case it won't, so just bumping the thread so if/when other users experience this issue, they have a reference as to how common the problem is and that there still is no solution.

I also had the same issue. Downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, problem solved!! I recommend this anti-malware app to all Mac users.
