The phone number "is not registered with iMessage"

Hi everyone,

Right now I can't seem to send some text messages from my OS X. Here is a list of things I have done that will have caused the error:

  • I fresh installed Yosemite about 2 days ago
  • I updated my iPhone to 8.1 this afternoon
  • I paired my device (I was able to send some texts from OS X)
  • I fresh installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone
  • I can't send some text messages from my computer

When I start a new conversation on iMessage, the name of the person remains red. When I try to send a message I get a popup saying: "<the number> is not registered with iMessage". The handoff is well configured because I am able to see an icon appear in the dock when I use the notes app.

What can I do to make this functionality work again?

Thanks

Nancy and Chris,

I am having the same problem. I haven't been able to send text messages from my 2010 MacBook Pro now to non-Apple device users for almost a full week now. I finally have the time to troubleshoot this, but my iPhone 5 doesn't seem to have 'text message forwarding' on my iPhone message settings. I have the latest iOS running on my phone (I think 10.2 I believe)? So I'm not sure what the issue is.

I've been on my phone and cannot find the 'Text Message Forwarding' option under Settings>Messages>... Has this changed?

All I have are as follows:

============

iMessage - on/off

Send Read Receipts = on/off

Send as SMS = on/off

Send and receive = My phone number displayed.

sub menu:

User your Apple ID for iMessages

You can be reached by imessage at... (my phone number displayed with check mark next to it)

MMS Messaging= on/off

Group Messaging = on/off

Show Subject Field= on/off

Character Count= on/off

Blocked= on/off

Keep Messages = Forever

Filter Unknown Senders= on/off

(Audio Messages) Expire = After 2 minutes

(Audio Messages) Raise to Listen

(Video Messages) Expire = After 2 minutes

===============

That's it. Where is this Text Message Forwarding option?

I get that error message when trying to use the Message app on my Mac - to my daughter's iPhone. I don't get it when using the Message app on my iPhone to her. I don't get that error when sending messages to my granddaughters from my Mac nor my phone - messages sent to from either also show up on my other device. This error is only a couple of months old. It used to work the same as my granddaughter's messages.

I don't see any difference between their contacts that would explain this.

I am having these problems too. On my Mac, I am running Sierra (10.12.1). On my iPhone SE I have iOS 10.1.1. I imagine things may be different as a result. But when I try to set 'Allow Calls on Other Devices' on the phone, I am told that FaceTime and iCloud must be signed in to the same Apple ID' — and they are, but it won't let me set this.
