The phone number "is not registered with iMessage"

Hi everyone,

Right now I can't seem to send some text messages from my OS X. Here is a list of things I have done that will have caused the error:

I fresh installed Yosemite about 2 days ago
I updated my iPhone to 8.1 this afternoon
I paired my device (I was able to send some texts from OS X)
I fresh installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone
I can't send some text messages from my computer

When I start a new conversation on iMessage, the name of the person remains red. When I try to send a message I get a popup saying: "<the number> is not registered with iMessage". The handoff is well configured because I am able to see an icon appear in the dock when I use the notes app.

What can I do to make this functionality work again?

Had exactly the same issue recently, ways to solve it:

- sign out from iMessage on computer (messages => preferences => accounts => sign out)

- sign out from iMessage on phone (settings => messages => toggle "iMessage" off

- sign in to iMessage with applID on phone (settings => messages => toggle iMessage on, click on "use appleID for iMessage)

- sign in to iMessage on computer (messages => preferences => accounts => sign in)

- close and reopen messages on computer, works

I'm having the same problem on my iPhone 6s. I checked in iMessage on my iPhone like Glenn said and there is no Text Message Forwarding.

Apologies! I was getting confused with Call Forwarding. Ignore what I said in my previous post; it's under Settings/Messages. It's the second item down in that menu on my phone.

I've tried this now. Repeatedly. It is still not working on my MacBook Pro. I can message people with Apple products, but SMS from iMessages is not working. Any other suggestions?
