iphone 6 ios 8.1 update fails error code 56

My case: Change terminal hardware error, i have applecare Protection Plan

ipad air wiped off in upgrading from 8.02 to 8.1. Really incredible. Lot of work LOST. Now asking to connect to iTunes...

I have noticed that itunes 12 doesn't like if your library is on a NAS. I ran into the same problem and had to relocate my library and then it worked fine.

I don't have any NAS on my network. All libraries are local and yet had the same problem.

I had my iPhone 6 replaced by the Apple Store yesterday. I was told that Apple were aware of the problem and it was a hardware problem, unrelated to the fact that it happened whilst updating. It was dealt with courteously and the only issue was they had run out of stock, so I had to go to another store to pick up the replacement. It was only a few miles away, so wasn't a big issue for me. Within 30 mins I had my replacement!

I was still nervous about updating to 8.1. Needn't have worried-it went without a hitch and I restored from the backup I made on the faulty iPhone. So pleased that the problem was resolved-hopefully new iPhone will last a bit longer!!!

I had the same issue. I called my wireless provider and was given the following steps:

1. Hold the home button in

2. Plug phone into computer (while still holding home button. itunes should be closed prior to plugging in)

3. itunes should automatically open. release home button after.

4. follow through with restore and download

This only works if you don't care about losing everything that you didn't have backed up. I was told some people have to complete these steps numerous times for it to even restore.

I had the same issue when I tried to update iOS 8.2 today. I removed SIM card and restore the phone, and now it works fine. It seems that there's a problem recognizing sim card in the restore(update) process.

Figured out how to fix it!

I just removed my sim card, and did standard process of restoring iphone, and that's it! my iphone is working again

I suggest that if you want to buy an iphone, don't update it without you know kind of consultation to the genius or others that be apple's technician because if you update it then if there is a problem and you can't use it for a while so better ask someone first like the technician of apple and other that know apple's product and then if there is any problem with like that i think you should go to some kind of service centre or contact apple support

TAKE THE SIM CARD OUT THEN RESTORE AGIAN. It worked for me!

I tried everything suggested and then the simcard thing and nothing worked but I wanted into ~/Library/iTunes/Carrier Support and deleted that.

Then it worked.

It works.

I got rid of my SIM card then tried to update my iPhone 6. And it works.
