I am having a problem with Yosemite mail, some of MS exchange emails are not sync with mail, they either don't appear in mail or the contents of the email don't appear, any help

Apple Mail under Yosemite is unusable for me.

We use Exchange 365. Since installing Yosemite, the Apple Mail app has decided it must fetch every single mail message and attachment that I have received over the last 4 years (even though these were already present on my Mac and available in the Apple Mail app under Mavericks). This process has been taking days. It may be that it is fetching the same mail over and over in an infinite loop. The activity window seems to show the same folders being fetched again and again.

In addition, the amount of time it takes to retrieve new mail is 3-5 minutes. Often the Mail app is out of sync with the Exchange server for hours on end. I have people complaining to me that I am not responding to their e-mails because Apple Mail is not syncing properly. My iPhone running IOS 8 does not have trouble getting new mail and staying in sync.

I have given up on Apple Mail and gone back to using Outlook Mac 2011, which works perfectly under Yosemite.

I thought I'd share what seems to have worked for me. I have 10.10.2.

  • In Mail->Preferences->[Exchange acct]->Advanced: disable "Automatically detect and maintain account settings"
  • In Mail->Preferences->[Exchange acct]->Outgoing Mail Server->(dropdown) edit SMTP server list->Advanced: disable "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" (also, re-select the exchange server in the dropdown if it was lost, mine did)
  • Restart Mail (important!)

You also want to change the default from 5 minutes to 1 minute (Under "General") if you want new mails to show up timely.

Cmd + Q works, but I think what this is not a good way to solve this issue, there is a lot of users (or maybe everyone who updated to the last version) who have the same problem and Apple must fix this problem with Mail.app... At previos versions (Maveriks) Mail.app with exchnage worked good...

Are apple support read this communitie?

I found this thread because having the same sync issue, and suggested workarounds only temporarily helped me (e.g., switching on and off automatic discovery).

However, here I found some vague indication about the maximum number of messages per mailbox suggested by Microsoft (5000). I was fairly beyond in the main folder, and after having reduced the number by moving messages in other folders, the issue seems solved (not sure yet it will last, but behavior is much better now).

This same issue of deletes not syncing back happens to me on two different computers, connecting to Exchange via IMAP even in a junk folder that only has a handful of messages in it. Read/Unread syncs almost immediately, but deletes only sometimes sync when i close out of Mail. Sometimes w/ out closing mail the delete syncs in a few hours...

Same issues here, for years actually, although the latest updates with Yosemite has helped me communicating with the mail servers a lot.

I hate to say it, but it seems that since Eudora 10 years ago, there has not been a reliable mail client around.

A colleague of mine, professionally trained in ICT, sitting next door to me, using lots of Microsoft stuff - and Apple sometimes - has concluded that using a browser directly with the mailserver is the only reliable way to work with the Exchange servers!

I know, it's not a great help,, but it seems that mail apps are causing problems in all types of user forums. A search for issues - on all platforms will produce millions of hits on the web.

Although, we all hope that Apple keep up the good work and try to improve even more....
