iMac mid 2010 graphics issues after installing Yosemite

I notice that after my Mac comes back up from sleep, graphics seem to be a bit slow.

Opening up the Downloads from the dock where the files Fan up seem jerky. Most impacted are the 2 games I have.

Playing Sonic racing and Castle of Illusions Mickey Mouse play slow and jerky. Lot of dropped FPS. Overall graphics are slow.

After I restart my Mac, everything is fine again. Never had this issue with Mavericks.

I tried "Reduce Transparency" Didn't help.

I even did a fresh re-install of Yosemite from scratch (booting up in recover mode, wipe out everything and download and install).

I don't have much software installed either. MS Office, Chrome, Google drive, PS, Lightroom. That's it.

Still the same problem. Mac wakes up from sleep and graphics are poor. Games run very jerky with loss of FPS.

I'm guessing Yosemite has some issues with ATI Radeon HD 5750. This is frustrating...

The 'bluetooth' device is a red herring I think. I have a wired keyboard, not a bluetooth one, and (as for you), waking with the keyboard will produce the fault, whilst waking with the power button does not produce the fault. I don't think bluetooth itself is relevant. For me anyway, it boils down to 'wake with power button' = no fault, 'wake with keyboard or mouse' = problem.

It occurs to me to try waking it using network access, (i.e. not with a connected peripheral, nor with the power button), and seeing where that leaves me.

After using 10.10.1, I confirm the issue randomly still exists. It's completely random. When I wake up my Mac with the keyboard for example there's a chance my Mac will have slower graphics performance. Download fan up is slightly jerky. Playing games have much slower fps.

So far using the power button to wake up the Mac hasn't caused this random issue.

I really hope Apple fixes this.

going on about a week since turning off transparency, which thus far has fixed the display corruption issue i've been experiencing since at least mavericks.

and since i have the iMac configured to never sleep, i'm not suffering from any of the performance lag. I'm going to set it to sleep tonight and look to use the power button as the way to wake it and see if I can save some $$$ while retaining performance without having to reboot.

I have done some more testing.

I currently have the beta for OS X 10.2. This issue is still present. If waking the Mac via keyboard or mouse after a prolonged sleep, the graphics issue still occurs.

However, with the Mac set to Wake for Network Access and with Screen Sharing turned on, if I wake the Mac by connecting to it from another using Screen Sharing, the graphics problem does not occur. So, for me, waking the Mac remotely works the same way as waking it via the Power Button. I realise this isn't really a 'quick and easy' way to wake your Mac, but maybe it sheds more light on why this is a problem to those out there who know more about the details of waking from sleep?

Macpro mid2010 16GB RAM ATI RADEON HD 5770.

Occasionally, the Apple LED 27 miniDP monitor goes totally black. Still has power, since the keyboard connected to its USB ports works. It happenes after a sleep.

The only fix is unplug the monitor and plug it again.

Also, when booting in safe mode, there are a couple of blinks with white horizontal stripes when loading the user account.

Please, file a bug report at bugreport.apple.com and send feedback about Yosemite at feedback.apple.com.

Thanks for the post. I have experienced similar distortion, and downgraded to Mavericks after coming from Snow, subsequently upgrading to Yosemite trying 10.1.

I have found that a few preference setting add ons needed updating, along with their applications, even between Mavericks & Yosemite. I removed all but Java & Flash preference settings using App Delete and (touch wood) the distortion seems to have abated.

Of course I also rebuilt the desktop and zapped the PRAM, verified the directories with TechTool, etc. I tried a clean install partition/migration, as well.

At this point (fingers crossed) I can only suggest making sure all software is both capable & updated, and would be happy to hear of others who might have managed to improve the issue... Thanks.

two to three weeks since turning off transparency and no corrupted video, no hangs or crashes where the machine states that a graphics issue occurred. after spending $250 on a new video card, part of me is upset that i may have wasted money, but by the same token while i was in the apple store and we were running diagnostics, it did pixelate ... so i'm not sure what the graphics problem is exactly. part of me wonders if there's something deeper than just the video card that had overheated from too much world of warcraft.

still have the performance hit, however, if the mac is allowed to go to sleep and is woken up with the keyboard or mouse. keeping it set to "never sleep" so i don't have to worry about it.

I may have a pretty good workaround to this issue.

I had some problems with my MacBook pro Mid 2010 waking up from sleep under Yosemite, and some graphics distortions just like those described here. I also could not get VMWare Fusion to run properly. While the guest OS clearly booted (little thumbnail showed it did), the main guest OS screen just stayed black.

Today, I realized that the two problems may be related and that it is in fact an issue with the graphics card driver for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M that is in my MacBook pro. I then thought that I may fix this problem if I set Yosemite to use the internal graphics card only. I downloaded gfxCardStatus, set it to "Integrated Only", and sure enough VMWare works like a charm. Also no graphics distortions since.

I hope this helps some people here.

I have a late 2012 iMac and after downloading Yosemite, the performance of my mac has been so slow. I've never experienced this issue before until now. I tried restarting my mac, reinstalling Yosemite, checked the "reduce transparency" box, and even adjusted how much energy my iMac uses. I wish I kept Mavericks in my time machine back up to reinstall it. If there's a way to get Mavericks back I'd be more than happy to know instead of having to stay with something unreliable.
