Flickering "Save As" dialogue screens in OS X Yosemite

Hi,
I've just updated to OS X Yosemite 10.10 on a MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2012 with 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 and Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB.

The "Save As" drop-down menu flickers in MS Office, Adobe CS. It did not do this before the installation of OS X Yosemite. I have updated those programmes to the latest versions and rebooted but the flickering still occurs.

I am running MS Office 2011 Version 14.4.5 and Adobe Creative Suite 6. In the screenshot below, the grey bar below the document view window flickers and it is difficult to select both the location and the document name to save.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same exact issue however; the flickering also occurs when I'm trying to upload something such as a document to an online filespace. I changed the layout of the finder and haven't tested to see if this solves my issue but has anyone else found alternative solutions? I quite like the cover flow layout and would like to keep that as a preference.

I am afraid the solution has to come from Apple. In the mean time we are at OSX 10.10.2, but the problem still exists. I even have the impression that the flickering is now a little worse than in 10.10.1. But the work around still works.

Does anyone have access to the 10.10.3 beta, who can (is allowed to) tell wether this is one of the items which are to be solved in that release?

Hello All,

I just installed 10.10.3 and after some preliminary testing of Excel, Word and Powerpoint is looks like the flickering is not present any more in the file dialogs!

To be honest I recently increased the amount of RAM in my Mini (from 4 to 16 Gbyte) and I am not certain if the flickering was solved by that or the OSX upgrade.

But either way: I am happy that is is finally solved.

I'm not seeing the flickering in Office 2016 preview. I suggest you log out of your User under the Apple in the Menubar.

Log into the Guest account.

Open the Office apps. they won't be in the Dock. Go to Applications to open.

Do you see the same behavior? If no, this could indicate an issue in your User's folder.

When you log back into your User, hold down the Shift key after entering your password. This will disable any login items.

If the problem goes away look for a conflict with a login item.

If you want this fixed, send Microsoft feedback using the Smile feature located under the search field in the upper right corner of the Word, Excel or PP window. Feedback goes directly to the appropriate product manager.

Hello Diane of Oregon,

Thanks for the elaborate response.

My experience following your suggestions is as follows:

Logging in as Guest user: I tested only with Excel. Apart from some flags raised by Parental control that the Preview 2016 Excel tried to reach quite a few remote sites (phoning home??), the flickering behavior of the open dialog was identical to my own account. Excel 2011 did not have the flickering problem under the guest account (identical to the behavior under my own account).

Logging back in as myself, without the login items, had no effect: Flickering in Preview 2016 and no flickering in 2011.

I already reported it to Microsoft immediately after my post on April 9th, using the Smiley menu feedback option (it is a beta release after all), but I think the problem is not confined to Microsoft applications. I also suspect that it is also related to the video hardware (I have a build-in Intel HD4000 in my Mac Mini).

Lets hope that Microsoft can persuade Apple to come up with a solution.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Gerard

Thanks for the feedback on your test. Now we know it's an issue related to your setup. I recently had a flickering issue with Chrome so I understand your frustration. Mine was fixed by removing an extensions that had previously worked without a problem.

If you want to go the extra mile and test your Yosemite install, you can create a second partition on your drive if there is enough free space (aprpox 30GB) or an external drive. We can install Yosemite and Office Preview. Boot from the new partition and test. If you still experience the problem then it is your hardware. If the problem goes away then it's something conflicting that's installed.

Yes, this is absolutely horrendous. I have it happening on 2 systems.

I actually thought it was related to the Flash memory on my 2014 Macbook Air, so I bought a 2015 Macbook Pro and it almost immediately experienced the same issue. It has not occurred, however, on my iMac...yet.

In both PPT and MS Word, when I try to add a file (image) to a document or presentation, it's almost impossible - due to the wait and frustration - to add images.

I have removed Cover Flow and it does absolutely no good.

The only "fix" that has worked for me is to fully reboot my system.

I am also wondering if the problem is linked or made worse by the fact that I use 2 large Dropbox accounts as well.

This issue makes using MS Office almost impossible and given that I'm running about $7,000 worth of Apple hardware and it's killing 2 out of 3 systems for me.
