Same issues -- updated indescribably slowly for hour, then froze completely on apple screen just before end of status bar. Holding down power button or home button, no reaction. Came here and blood pressure started zooming reading early posts about full factory restore and lost data. Then skipped to last page and read glady44wings -- hard reset, both power and home buttons down together. worked like a charm. Shut down, immediately came back up, zipped through installation status bar few seconds, complete update installation steps (basically signing back into icloud, location services, etc), and it's all there, faster than before. disaster averted. Thanks glady44wings. Shame on apple for putting everyone through this. BTW got same space requirement message as donaldfrombiggar and couldn't download until amount had been freed up.

i ve tried so many times as you guys all said but nothing works. i connect my ipad mini to pc and itunes. it keeps showing apple logo. when i hold power dan home keys, the apple logo dissappeared and it shows the battery status which is about to drain. then i let go the buttons after a while, the apple logo appeared again. nothing works.

in itunes, nothing i can do except i can only update all the apps. should i do this first?

I tried to update it today and same thing happened. It got stuck on the itunes logo screen. >_>

-(while connected to the computer w/itunes open) Tried pressing home + on/off key until it shows the apple logo then it goes back to the itunes logo.

-(not connected) Tried pressing home + on/off key until it shows the apple logo then it shows a black screen. Then if i press on button it goes back to the itunes logo screen.

Please help!!!!!

I just had the same issue =( After the latest / greatest Chrome upgrade, it became reeeaaaly unstable, like a crash every 4-5 minutes. I thought what if iOS upgrade can fix?

Anyways, I had to reset my iPad to "factory defaults".

Here is what I did:

1. Updated iTunes to the latest version.

2. A separate button "Reset" appeared (in previous version of iTunes I had installed there was only "Reset and update" button available).

3. The iPad came up with 8.1.2.

I'm now trying to figure it out how to restore app's settings from a backup ..

Good luck guys!

I done exactly the same tonight.

My 7 year old had been giving me grief for about a week about this IS08 thingy.

We made a start at installing it tonight.

Got the usual issues.

Screen with apple logo and progress bar nearly completed.

WOULD NOT SWITCH OFF OR DO ANYTHING.

I was really cheesed off and was ready to launch it out the window.

Googled the problem.

LOADS of websites full of misery and heartache!

Done the trick with the 2 buttons at once for a few seconds.

HEY PRESTO RESULT!!!!

My wee fella will be well chuffed when he wakes up tomorrow!!!

It seems to be working FASTER than before.

If you have these symptoms, do the 2 button trick, It WILL work.

Meant to say,

It is an IPad 2 model A1395 16GB device.

Happy you got it working again Jimmock, however, there seem to be varying results for people using this method though.

My guess would be that these devices are freezing/crashing during the installation of the new iOS. In some cases (based on what I've read in these forums), this freeze happens towards the end of the installation, when the progress bar is almost full. In those scenarios, people seem to be able to restart the device (with the two buttons) and the iOS is updated and ready to use.

In other cases (like mine), the progress bar only gets about halfway, and then freezes. In this scenario, restarting the device only prompts the user to plug it back into their computer to have it restored, erasing your content back to your last back-up.

I can't be certain, as no one from Apple seems kind enough to respond to this forum, but my guess would be that the latter scenario is causing a crash at a critical point in the upgrade, resulting in the device being unusable until restored. I only point this out because I think people should be aware that this "two button" solution may not work for everyone, and that they should back-up their devices on their computers before attempting to upgrade their iOS.

Hi Kevin,

Points taken.

We were maybe just REALLY LUCKY.

One thing I did notice AFTER we managed to get it working was:-

My wee fella had HUNDREDS of photos in the IPad.

Things like photos of the fireplace or the carpet!!

We deleted the lot of them.

I don't know what kind of memory all these photos would have taken?

Maybe the IPad was right on the limits to update the IOS8 thingy?

It might have been different if we had deleted all the silly pics BEFORE we tried the upgrade??

I'll never know.

But this might be worth considering BEFORE commencing the upgrade.

I hope this helps someone that is having major grief with the upgrade operation.

My wee fella tells me his IPad is REALLY FAST now!!

Even after all the trauma and grief I think it WAS worth doing it.

Had the IPad been scrap, my views would have been different!!!!!

SOLUTION. I am on an iPad-2 (2nd generation, model mc979ll/a). The update stalled with very little left on the progress bar, I would estimate at 95% or more complete. I pressed both buttons and held them down to do a "cold start". The iPad came back up and completed the update with some prompts. I would say it is noticeably slower, both in opening applications and inside the application. Several aps appear to have lost some of their related data...

This worked for me!

After 17 hours of pushing buttons, reboots, lock-ups, no restoration of files from the iTunes backup, it all came down to judiciously yanking the cord!

I'm exhausted. Apple is now on my doo-doo list. And I've always been their biggest champion at work. Not any more!

I had the same problem while updating iPad 2. I think there are two methods to update the IOS:

1) With iPad connected to a computer, choosing update through iTunes

2) Without connection to a computer, via software update through settings

I chose the first one. As everyone else, I got stuck through the update and I reset the iPad by holding down the power and home keys together. Unfortunately, the update did not proceed after the reset unlike many others in this forum. I saw a message saying I had to plug into the computer and iTunes told me I had to update or restore the iPad. I chose update.

Then I went to sleep, and in the morning my iPad was freshly updated. I don't know how long the process took.

installed iOS 8.1 on iPad2 now iPad totally frozen on apple logo.
