iOS 8.1: battery drain on iPhone 6 Plus

Hi,

I got the iPhone 6 Plus(128GB) and updated to the iOS 8.1

I have charged my phone for 6 hours under airplane mode. After that, I have done a hard restart (press the home button and the power button at the same time).

And now, battery drain on my 6 Plus. I watch my battery % drop while I'm using whatsapp for like 5 mins.

The battery on the 6 Plus is way more better than that on the 5s when it was on iOS 8.0.2, and now I don't see that. The battery now on the 6 Plus is still better than that on the 5s but it is not as impressed as it was.

One more thing, I never got disconnected with my wifi at home when my 6 Plus is on iOS 8.0.2 and now I got it, and that happen very very very often.

Apple, please fix that as soon as you can.

Thanks.

Nathan

If every data of every single app can be backed up to the iCloud, and iCloud backup never had a problem, then your solution would be perfect.

But last time, when I had the photo syncing problem with my 5s, staff of the Genius Bar told me NOT to restore backup from iCloud but from my iMac, I know this is not about the battery, I just want to point out that sometimes iCloud backup will not work.

You said your battery can last 2 days and half of battery life and 13-14hrs of time usage. I guess maybe you are not using the iPhone 6 Plus as your major communication device? I have the same usage time with my LG G3 but not the iPhone 6 Plus, or maybe I did too much internet with LTE on?

You said apple is not going to fix anything because there is nothing that needs to be fixed, then I guess Apple do not have to solve anything once a newer version of iOS has came out.

They don't even have to release the beta version, because every problem came from the user.

Your solution is just perfect, thanks lol

As I remember, there are bugs that cause battery drain on the previous version of iOS, and Apple has released a newer version with an improvement, something like “solved the battery problem on some device”. At that time, people were doing the exact same thing waiting yelling “apple please fix this”.

And yes, every time we got a new iOS update, we should do a CLEAN INSTALLATION from zero, and spend our time on restoring everything we should have on our phone, and Apple should just remove the backup function.

Hi natx20, I think that sometimes the iCloud backup can make troubles (or not) it all deppends on what kind of things you want to recover from iCloud. I use it mainly to backup my contacts, find my iphone, calendar, notes, and some apps that needs to save something to icloud (as examples, sygic saves to icloud my favorite places, some games saves the progress , and so on...). But i know people that has to backup for example the complete list of things of whatsapp images, videos, chats, that could grow up tons of Mb if you don't clean the cache from time to time.

Yes my iphone is my major communication device, I use it for almost everything, while the iPad normally use it for gaming when I'm bored while I'm at home for example.

LTE drains a little faster the battery while on standby, but when browsing uses the same if not less battery thatn 3g.

I'm not saying that Apple is not going to fix "anything". Of course, sometimes, things have to be fixed, like 8.0.1, when there was a lot of people complaining on iphone 6 losing the network. What I mean exactly is that Apple is not going to fix some "random" issue that it's not very clearly defined. For example:, people complaining about battery draining just in standby. Apple could just take all models of iphone capable of 8.1 (which are from iphone 4s and upwards) , do a fresh installation of 8.0.2 or 8 and later force and upgrade to 8.1 to really check if there is a problem in the firmware upgrade.

If that test goes OK and nothing goes wrong with battery life on all kinds of iphones, then the problem must be on each iphone configuration and/or apps installed.

If any person goes to a genius bar and tells the technician the problem, the first and most simple question would be "have you tried a fresh install of 8.1"??

I remember the last time apple did a firmware upgrade to improve battery life, and it was (correct me if Im wrong) with IOS 5.1. The changelist or changelog did say specifically that the battery life had been improved. And guess what? I hadn't any issues with 5.0.1 on battery life (it was a normal iphone 4, which I had to charge every night since the battery at the end of the day was about 35%), so after upgrading to 5.1 i got a little bump (not much, about 15% better overall, but honestly I could percieve it) since after the upgrade I could reach the end of the day with 43...44...45% percent battery.

Nowadays, with the iphone 6 plus, I do allways the same routine: when I wake up to go to work I disconnect the iphone from the charger at 100%, and when I go to bed the iphone is at 77...78....79 % of battery, which for me It's so awesome...(and of course using the phone It was my main reason to go back from Android to iphone (I had the galaxy s4 after the iphone 4S), and normally the galaxy s4 reached the day with 50-55%.

I think I'm a bit paranoid, and that's why I allways do clean installation of any firmware (this means about 1 hour lost in re-configuring the software again, sometimes more...), it's true that this kind of things should be done easier for the non-tech users and allways work right any update, no matter what kind of software you have installed

FOUND A FIX

I had this same problem while currently overseas. Both my gf's and I have iPhone 6s on 8.1. We left them on airplane mode all day and would find the battery almost completely drained by the end of the day.

Through trial and error we found turning off your notifications make all the difference. We didn't turn them all off, just the most active ones. Im sure if you turn all the notifications off you will get even better results.

We were finishing a day of picture taking with 5% battery life. After turning the most active notifications off we finish the day with 55%.

Hope this helps.

Guys I have the exact same problem before. Have tried and googled everything on the net but to no avail. Just today I found the culprit, apparently is the date and time setting bug that's causing the heating and draining issue. All I did was turned on the set automatically under the date and time setting, the heating went off instantly! I have no idea if is only me or anyone else? Give it a try! It works for me!
