Photos in iMessages/SMS are missing

Hi, Everyone!

I've noticed that since updating to iOS 8.0.2 but before updating to 8.1.0, photos are missing in text & iMessage threads.

Here's how I noticed it:

On Friday of last week, I was looking at old pictures dating back to October 2013 in the detail view on a text message thread on my iPhone 5S, running iOS 8.0.2. Everything was there -- no problems.

Fast forward to Sunday evening: I decided to forward a photo I had stumbled upon Friday night, but this time in detail view every few pictures in the same thread were replaced with two overlapping blue rectangles in a white box. When you click them you just see a grey background with the file name and file type in blue. When you look at the picture in the conversation, it appears as a white box with a blue question mark. (see attached screenshot of all three instances).

This is happening in iMessage conversation as well as strictly Text Messages, and files are missing from both sides of the conversations. There are even some photos that are missing in the conversation but are still sitting safe and sound in my camera roll!

No settings were changed between Friday to Sunday evening-no automatic updates, battery didn't die, didn't reset my phone or drop it, etc.

Messages have been set to save forever. I have iCloud turned on for Photos.

Any ideas on why this is happening?

I have since upgraded (last night 10/20/14) to iOS 8.1 AND have reset all settings to see if it would solve the problem. Space isn't an issue--I have 3 GB of free space currently. No such luck! 😢

ssorry it took me so long but the news isn't good. the guy I talked to knew what he was doing. short story is the message app is corrupted. that was the error message he got. he said I can backup to the cloud and do a restore but I'd prob just be backing up a corrupt nessagf app and then restore it on my phone. he said I could save any pick I have and reset phone to factory. but in that scenario I still lose all those message pics. They don't fix a bug until a ton of people complain. sorry :-(

I have just had this issue occur on my iPhone 5S. Noticed a photo I got on Christmas day was gone, checking my other conversations it seems most attachments for the last 2 years are just gone! This is very annoying as I have lost all the pictures my sister has sent of my new nephew. The size of the messages app usage on my phone seems to have decreased. It was over 1GB but now its less that 350MB. Seems the photos are gone 😟

Help!!! my pictures disappeared from texts on iPhone 6 plus this weekend. I lost pictures from last few years 😟 . It's just images with question mark instead of picture with IMG #. I didn't do any changes in settings. Last picture received on Thursday and lost it. I received this morning text with picture as a test and that one I can see. My software is up to date 8.1.2. Anyone knows what is going on???

I've the same issue with my iPhone5s it all started when i installed iOS 8.1.1 i tried different options like rebooting the phone multiple times , turning on and off the iMessage option in the setting , did a factory reset and restored it from old back prior to 8.1.1 installation nothing seems to be working it is frustrating and annoying.. So i went to Apple store and me a GENIUS from the Genius Bar they have no clue of what this issue is , i asked how could apple screw this up to that he replied every software has bugs , seriously??? Finally he said deleting everything and set up your phone as new iPhone to that i said i will loose all my data and Apple doesn't provide a selective back up restore its only iMessage that has problem for that why do i have to delete all my data which I've it for so many yrs just for a stupid bug i asked can he vouch that setting up as new iPhone would resolve the issue he said hope for the best...

Finally i asked him will Apple fix it in future iOS releases he said this problem exists only for few people there are over 100 million devices and unless 30-40% devices report the issue the chances are very less to have this issue fixed by Apple anytime soon....

If anyone of you have another working solutions other are setting it up as new iphone pls post it here...

I've tried all the different resets and turning off iMessages... nothing seems to work.

Did anyone have any luck????? If so, please share any new solutions.

I'm absolutely devastated right now. I've lost countless pictures of my grandpa that were sent to me before he passed last year. There has to be a fix. I hope the techs gave nicholasfromlenexa accurate information.

Same exact problem here, all the attachments in text messages gone, not the ones store on the photostream but the text messages.

I did all the "workarounds":

- Reset and Hard reset

- Reset Network Settings

- IMessage on/off

- Restore from an older backup....

same thing.... Does it look like this to all of you?

THANK YOU APPLE FOR DELETING ALL MY PHOTOS WITH NO WARNING, YOUR SOFTWARE KEEPS GETTING WORSE AND WORSE

I discovered the same issue yesterday when looking for a video. Really annoying and horrible thinking all those great pics and videos had been lost!

Great news - I found that the images are still out there somewhere as they can be seen through Messages on a Mac. Hopefully this means Apple can come up with a fix!

These fixes didn't work for me

- Reset and Hard reset

- Reset Network Settings

- IMessage on/off

Add me to the growing list of people that are affected by this bug.

Happened on the weekend and have now done 2 restores from different backups prior to it occurring. Neither worked.

AMeads to that the issue now of photos previously edited not showing in the photos app and I am mighty disappointed. It may be time to sell and move elsewhere because it's not worth losing photos of my life that I thought this device and software was capable of maintaining.

IP6 128 iOS 8.1.2 (probably not for much longer).

Yep,

Same issue here, have had it for about 3 weeks now. I think it happened between upgrading from 8.0.1->8.1.1. Text messages before 8.0.1 seem to be affected, text messages on 8.1.2 seem to be ok, there's a window between 8.0.1 where all of my pictures in text messages have changes to question marks. Similar to a previous poster, I spoke to Apple customer support and she said that Apple deems the issue "not widespread" so won't directly address it, I disagree, there are posts all over the internet about the same issue.

She did encourage me to send the issue here, and I encourage you all to do the same.. maybe if they get enough feedback about the same issue, they'll start addressing it.

Just an update on this. I was able to use software to extract the old attachments out of my iCloud backup. It seems that they are still in the system but are missing from the actual folders.

Curious if anyone knows how to get them back in to the correct folders.

Worst case scenario is that your photos and other attachments are still retrievable.
