Home sharing does not work with iTunes 12

I have been using home sharing with iTunes a lot, mainly to stream TV shows from my Mac Pro (2008) to my Apple TV (3rd Gen). But after installing Yosemite and iTunes 12 it doesn't work any longer. My Apple TV finds the iTunes Library, but can't connect with it. At the same time home sharing worked just fine with my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 (iOS 8.0.2). After installing iOS 8.1 home sharing with my iOS devices doesn't work, too – same problem as with Apple TV: iTunes library is found but devices can't connect with it.

I already tried to solve the problem with the suggestions on Apples troubleshooting page: Fehlerbehebungsmaßnahmen für die Privatfreigabe

My setup:

  • Mac Pro (2008) with OS X 10.10 (14A389), iTunes 12.0.1.26, connected via Ethernet and WiFi
  • Router: Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7270
  • iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1
  • iPad 2 with 8.1
  • Apple TV (3rd Gen), newest software update, connected via Ethernet

Any ideas, what the reason for that problem could be and how to solve it?

Thanks a lot in advance.

BTW: Sorry for my English. I am not a native speaker.

Greetings from Germany

I had the same.. I found that by signing iTunes out of the store and back in again seemed to correct the problem.

Hope this helps 🙂

Having same issues.

I am running

  • Windows 10 with iTunes 12.3.3
  • iMac with El Capitan with iTunes 12.3.3
  • Apple TV (3rd Gen) with latest update
  • iPhone 6S

I can airplay from any device to my apple TV, I cannot however get home sharing to work at all from any device. Apple TV will not see any computers in the home sharing network.

I've tried every troubleshooting tip that I've been able to find.

BestBuy's Geek Squad says it is because apple is not support the older appleTV anymore. He said apple removed itunes emulation in Windows OS and that the Apple TV cannot see El Capitan because it is a newer OSX and the Apple TV can't see it because of that.

If any of this is true, I'll be dumping all my mac products. (which would suck because i have 2 mac book pros, an imac, 2 ipads and multiple phones)

Please help if anyone knows how to resolve this issue.

This is the guy at Best Buy trying to get you to buy a new Apple TV.

I was having the same problem with my setup. I have an early 2009 iMac and an Apple TV3 (1st generation of the 3rd gen). Mine wasn't working all day today but after updating my OS then signing out of itunes, restarting itunes, and signing back in it is working now.

Try to sign out on the computer, restart everything, then sign back in on the computer. You may also need to do the same on you apple TV.

I had this same problem and followed all the steps to turn off home sharing and then turn it back on all devices.

I was about to give up when I decided to go to my router. I unplugged it and waited 30 seconds and plugged it back in. When it all booted up, lo and behold..... i saw my library on my apple tv.

Not sure if this will work for you, but it is worth the shot. Hope it helps
