yosemite graphics problem on macbook

I'm having major issues with my 2011 MacBook Pro 15" after updating to Yosemite and sometimes before as well. It seems to take a considerably longer time to boot my computer now. I've had weird flickering of the screen which includes strange colored lines appearing, my computer overheats and the fan will sometimes run continuously for no apparent reason. And now my computer will not boot at all but gets stuck on a gray screen with the Apple Logo and a progress bar that freezes about a third of the way across. And the computer overheats while it's trying to boot which causes the fan to run constantly while unsuccessfully booting. My laptop is always in a stand which is slightly elevated on an angle for better air flow.

Also, I was able to do a hardware test using Option + D, even though my computer wouldn't boot. The end result was "no trouble found". Hmmmmm.

So in short, I have NO laptop at the moment. Very frustrating.

I've read all over the internet that there are issues with this particular model. Hoping Apple will do something to rectify the situation so many users are having. I was considering buying an iMac, but now I'm not sure. Apple's reputation seems to be headed downhill recently. Maybe I'll just switch back to a PC. :-/

I tried everything on this thread including gfxCardStatus and various Energy Saver settings. Nothing worked but I did get my computer functioning again when I restored it entirely to Mavericks. I really hope that the rest of you guys have a full backup because your computer is a brick unless if you can do this.

This is such **** poor QA by Apple that they didn't catch this. I was really worried that I would have permanent hardware failure being that the thing was constantly overheating, locking up, refusing to boot. I'm a huge Apple fan but the way they handle things like this is ********. Acknowledge the problem, suggest workarounds, allow users to bring in the macbooks to the Apple Store free of charge and get this FIXED.

Stop freaking out and take the right actions.

I had your exact same problem when first installed Yosemite on the very same laptop. It was a fresh install. At the second attempt everything went fine.

My suggestion is to do a clean fresh install using the LATEST version, 10.10.2. There a a bunch of tutorials online about how to make a bootable Yosemite install usb thumb drive (I used an SD Card).

One more thing: You'll still have some issues with graphic slowdowns when connected to an external display. But you can address those too.

I'm afraid the Yosemite release was a little too fast than it was supposed to, and I'm also surprised and a bit suspicious about the beta testing which was done with real users prior its release. It looks like no one with our machines reported these problems. Pretty strange.

I just started to experience the GPU problems ever since 10.10.2 came out.

I have also reloaded the OS (CLEAN) install primarily use Safari with AdBlock, and 1Password as my only extensions.

Today I was using image capture to scan a photo and the system locked up with the following screen..

I also ran an extended Apple hardware test <OPTION> <D> on boot up.. No errors

Ideas?

I was finally able to get back onto my computer by using an external hard drive backup (Time Machine) to boot from and then I restored Yosemite, which I'm assuming means that Yosemite was reinstalled. Seems to be working okay for now … at least the fans aren't going crazy and it's not heating up. Still seems to have some issues though. Hope that helps someone.

I had a lot of crashes too after update to yosemite. I have a MBP 2011 and the OS doesn't start up, just keep restarting, i tried to restore the system but i just got a blue screen. I took my MBP to Apple support workshop for review , and was told that the GPU ATI had died -.-

Someone had the same problem ? Anyone know if you can recover in some way with some old OS?

I can not even watch netflix anymore on my macbook air...wow after being a loyal apple customer for 10 years i might actually have to move on...too bad

Finally got mine fixed!!! Ended up doing as someone above suggested and downloaded the Yosemite upgrade .app over to a bootable USB and re-upgrading from the USB. After running the upgrade again I have not experienced any of the graphics problems even when running the apps that were 100% of the time locking up my machine before the upgrade. Following the upgrade I have all of my apps and data intact and have not experienced any issues since. Here are the directions I followed:

I have the same issue on my early 2011 MBP 17". I don't have a permanent solution, but I eventually managed to get it to boot up in safe mode (hold down shift key at startup) after I booted up using the original install disc (holding down c key at startup). I'm not sure why but the laptop seems to be able to boot up just fine off the disc. I then go to Startup Items (in the utility menu), select my MBP internal hard drive again, and restart in safe mode... Once there, I managed to download and install gfxCardStatus 2.3, and selected Integrated Only. At first it didn't seem to do anything, but after opening a couple of folders the screen when blank again. I assumed it had crashed again, but it rebooted itself very quickly, and gave me back my laptop in full working mode. I have now been able to perform another backup to Time Machine and send some working files to my Dropbox, so I'm ready for the next failure... which I fear is still immanent... but at least I have my data safe.

Just updated to 10.10.2 last week and now I'm here with you guys.

Black screen when using any Adobe program, have to shutdown and let it sit for 20 min before it will come back on.

Nevermind re-installing from USB, it definitely made things better but it is still very broken. 2 days later I had it crash hard. Took about 5 minutes of reboots, and clearing PRAM to get it to start again. Also noticed that when I try to HDMI out to my TV the picture on the tv does not render properly and it is unwatchable. Once again, restoring from a Mavericks backup. This is the kind of thing that I used to hate about Microsoft. They use their users as beta testers. Is this where apple is heading now????

I did just as you suggested. It is much better however I have had a very hard graphics related crash since then and it can no longer drive my tv through HDMI. You should stop giving out that advice, it is not a fix. Apple needs to step up here and get this fixed. Again, reverting back to Mavericks.

Wait, is this a "replacement" or repair? The link seems to indicate it's a repair......did they replace yours? I can't be without my computer for any extended period of time bc of work.
