Yosemite - Mail grouping unrelated messages from same sender

Since upgrading to Yosemite, mail is grouping messages (I have it set to group by conversation) by sender rather than by conversation. So now I have three different subjects lines all grouped together in a hodgepodge that is frustrating to sort through. I tried ungrouping, which separated them all, and regrouping and the problem still persists. I have restarted and still no luck. Anyone else having this issue? Any 'cures'?

I am also having this issue.. Hide Related does not help unless you have messages in other folders, then those messages will be hidden. I also wrote to apple support about this and am hoping for a solution. I have more than 4 conversations with different subjects linked into 1 with over 175 messages.. It is very frustrating. I did notice this happened a little with Mavericks, but it was no more than 2 conversations and would not be too bad. But now I have 3 months or unrelated conversations linked and it is tedious to find the right message/subject this way.

To throw more information into this.. I've noticed the problem now occurring across different email accounts.. with different subjects.. about completely different things!

I'm back to having grouping turned off, and my email productivity is going to complete ****. For the first time - I'm definitely considering moving away from Apple Mail to something else.

Postbox seems a good shout. It's paid for but ****, if it sorts this problem out I couldn't care!

Gonna go whine at Apple again now. They need to know how much their sh*t is f*cking people up who have chosen to depend on their software.

My incoherently grouped conversations seem to include some messages with email header like:

Mail/View/Messages/AllHeaders give me one of these:

I think it might be grouping threads together based on the threads containing a message with '<>' as a null reference.
