Yosemite Preview is not the same as Mavericks Preview!

Preview App in Yosemite renders annotations differently than Preview in Mavericks.

I have several PDFs that were annotated with previous versions of Preview that were great. Opening up those PDFs in Yosemite shows "stroked" text border around text boxes and a different font size, ruining the formatting and original annotation. It looks fine on Quicklook, but when the PDF is actually opened, there is change in the annotation formatting.

I have also tested opening these PDFs with Preview version 7 (from Mavericks) in Yosemite and everything appears as it always normally had. This definitely appears to be an issue with Version 8's rendering engine or layout engine. Note: I have only ever used Preview for these annotations

Here are some screenshots of the Preview issue:

On Mavericks, I just annotated red text on an otherwise non-annotated PDF document. The text frame around the annotated text was invisible when saved.

On Yosemite, this PDF opened normally with no border of any kind around the red annotated text. This appears to be working correctly in Preview 8.

You will see from this screen shot that my line color on Mavericks Preview is set to transparent.

Same Problem:

In Mavericks I was able to edit and add textboxes, print them smoothly and save as regular pdf, here and example:

The very same file saved in mavericks and open after migration in yosemite:

I think something went wrong while updating this app, annotation potitions are completely broken.

I opened some other pdf files annotated in windows that looked 100% fine in mavericks, in yosemite they are completely broken.

Please any comment appreciated.

I have been using Preview for a few years, and found it was very easy to use it to fill in forms (adding text in the right boxes, signing it, etc), or to annotate articles and theses written by my students (adding annotation boxes quickly). Now:

- I cannot get the "Text Insertion" function to do anything at all (so I cannot use Preview to fill in forms anymore).

- When I insert a line, it always gets put in the middle of the screen and I have to move both ends one by one (which is very slow). I cannot draw a line by clicking on origin and destination anymore (as I have done in drawing software for more than 20 years!).

- When I insert my signature, it always gets put in the center and has to be moved, which is very slow (why no more click and drag a rectangle ?).

- Annotations also always get inserted in the center and have to be moved later to the desired location.

This is all very slow and annoying. Operations that were done with a single click now require two or three clicks and mouse motions. And for text insertion, I just cannot see how to do it at all.

Is there a way to mitigate at least some of these issues ?

For now, I try to survive with the older version of Preview, but I notice that it does not behave very well anymore when installed in Yosemite. I also sent feedback. But I do need a solution ASAP, so if anyone has ideas, I will appreciate it greatly!

Thanks!

I was able to get the Mavericks Preview app back from Time Machine. It's a little tricky.

The Yosemite Preview app cannot be moved or changed! To restore the Mavericks Preview, right click and save it to a location other than the Applications folder. Then rename the Mavericks Preview to something like Preview7. Place that in your Applications folder. You can now choose to change all .pdf file to open with the older version. Or you can leave things as they are and open .pdf files for annotation by right clicking and selecting Preview 7.

I am at a loss to understand why Apple would totally f--- up a useful feature. Whoever did this at Apple had to know that the change was terrible. Why this change was made is mystifying. Unless Apple intends to offer an improved, better Preview app for an additional fee.

Thanks. I was actually able to reclaim a previous version of Preview from a laptop that had not been updated yet to Yosemite.

Indeed, I find this change totally mystifying. I cannot understand why they made this change; even if they intend to sell a version of Preview, they did not really remove features from the App (I also found how to insert text, but it always go ---you guessed it--- in the middle of the frame!), they just made it very hard and painful to use, which makes for a terrible user experience: this does not seem to be the Apple's way of charging for things that used to be free...

Same Problem here!

All my study notes in the last 5 years are made in apple preview. Now they look horrible! See the example below.

It's annoying that this essential feature is messed up like this.

I'm not against further develompent of applications. But in this case the downwards compatibility should absolutely always have highest priority.

A lot of work is destroyed by neglecting this rule!

Whats sad is Microsoft has been going out of its way to improve apps based on feedback. I swear every feedback (complaint) I sent about OneNote was fixed or added in the next update within months. Im sure other users had the same problems.

But apple seems to not have increased its workforce in proportion to increased number of customers. I never thought I would look at a friends cheaper PC with jealousy.

I'm going to start voting with my dollars. I hope they are reading this.... Bad job!
