printer hookup problems and mac library losses

i'm trying to get my macbook with OS X 10.4.7 to print to an hp deskget 648c, which is really old so the cd to install the printer said it couldnt be read by the computer.
I went on the hp website and they told me to move everything from my library>login and library>launchagents to the desktop, and get rid of the originals.
They said my printer would work once i restarted it, but it didnt. Also they said i could move all those things back, but now i cant.
was that really detrimental to the computer? and is there any way i can hook up this printer?
