I had noticed a couple duplicates before (even with Mavericks) but now there are suddenly 5 "iMac"'s showing under Shared & Devices in Finder. What's going on? There's only one iMac and two WIN PC's on network. Been this way for years.

I just noticed this @ Safari>iCloud>Settings;
I believe this is a bug. I think there is a naming conflict with one of the low-level processes that does networking. I reported it to Apple, but at this time there's really nothing you can do about it.

Same here, mine happened after Yosemite install, it changes, it has been as low as (2) and as high as (5) I followed the rather old link below and it got rid of the number beside my computer ID but my computer still shows as a shared PC device so all it did was correct the name, and for how long who knows.
Fingers crossed we'll see a fix for this, Apple bugs & glitches seem to be multiplying like cockroaches.....

This clearly is a bug. i think its connected with the WIFI drop out problems i get a different problem !!! Its not affecting me working (those drives do not exist at all!!!!)
but it is a bit cookie..they go away if i reboot.
It changed to this during Sleep overnight (lost all the #'d duplicates) but remained the same after Restart. Changed to "iMac (2)" later on. So I changed the computer name (System Prefs>Sharing>Computer Name). Keeps changing back afterwards. Annoying. 😠

Same here. Started after Yosemite install on 3 machines. Shared machines rename themselves with parenthetical instance suffixes, which renders the previous versions unusable, and seemingly undeletable. Completely renaming the machine something else will clear it up only long enough for it to start the process over again.
And like that... it mysteriously stops. Nothing the last few days, nor any updates.
it likely won't stay that way, mine is constantly changing i now have 4 differently numbered under the shared devices

I had corrected the computer name (System Prefs>Sharing>) a few times, also turned Wi-Fi Off/On. Not sure if one or both helped, but that's when it stopped.
Having the exact same issue. Currently at nine duplicate names in the sharing sidebar. Not critical, but very annoying.
Mine is the same, the iMac i'm on currently lists itself in the sidebar as iMac, iMac (10), (13), (18), (3), (7), (9) & (2).
The highest I have seen is iMac (26) 😮

Mine still hasn't reverted back to this behavior and the only changes I've applied since are;
I had to change the computer name a couple times, but only once with the other two. And no other updates either; OS X,..etc.
