iMac 5K Retina extremely slow Mission Control

this is not working with my imac, its just a little improement. it still stutters..... i really hope there will be a update soon!!

I just updated to the latest 10.10.1 beta released yesterday and I think it is a bit better. Animations do not lag that much, especially switching between Spaces or using the quick preview feature of the OS.

Just went to the Apple Store and their display units do the same (jerky Mission Control).

FYI: I tried the "reduce transparency" thing and cleared the various caches with onyx as mitsuko11 suggested. Even todays update (which resolves other issues) didn't bring any fix for me. A reboot always helps to improve performance in the first way but the lack ist always coming back.

I have test driven the base retina iMac in the Apple Store and I have found the same behaviour: After opening something like 7 apps (Mail, iPhoto, iMovie, Safari, Reminders, iMessage, Maps) mission control animation is basically gone to something like 1 fps. I attributed it to the base graphics card, the AMD R9 M290X. I believe this card just isn't strong enough to drive a 5k display, the core of this card dates back to 2012.

This however is my assumption. If it is actually a software problem or you could solve it otherwise, please let me know as I would be interested in buying the retina iMac. I have also read reports that with the R9 M295X animation stays smooth, but couldn't check that myself.

i called apple support 2day. they did not hear about this problem yet (?)

so the counceler adviced me to reinstall osx from the internet blank without any backup date. but the behavior was there at the very beginning, so i guess i can leave that right? did anybody already check that out?

ok was at apple store today. they did not know the problem yet (?) but where very nice and checked the issue on the phone with apple. they say its a software issue and should be fixed soon....

I have the same issue, called apple support and they advised me to format and re-install. I did as instructed, it did not solve the issue. I went to a few apple stores and checked their iMac 5k on display and found that each one has the same issue; it is smooth if there are not al lot of windows/apps, but very slow once more windows/apps are introduced! I have a strong believe that it is a software issue and not a graphic card issue (my assumption only).

Anyone here with an iMac Retina and the R9 M295X graphics card (and not the R9 M290X)? Is mission control smooth with more than 7 application windows open in this hardware configuration?

I returned my iMac with the M290X and I picked one up with the M295X on Tuesday, and it has been running wonderfully. I'm not saying that the M290 won't eventually receive a software/driver update which fixes the issues with that model, but the M295X seems to not be affected. Everything runs very well: WindowServer is using a much more normal % of the CPU, and everything is "buttery smooth".

Really? I wish there was one with that graphics card at the Apple Store I could try out. This is making me consider returning mine to Best Buy & custom ordering from Apple with this GPU.

So I uninstalled XtraFinder & Mission Control seems much faster now. there's a bit of lag, but it's not that bad. What also helped was turning the resolution down from 3200x1800 to the one underneath that.
