Yosemite [erroneously] displays multiple Shared Instances under Finder

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have noticed that my iMac appears several times in the Shared area of Finder

e.g

Devices

iMac (13)

Shared

iMac

iMac (2)

iMac (4)

iMac (5)

iMac (6)

iMac (7)

iMac (8)

etc..

I had noticed something similar under Mavericks; the System Log suggested that there was another system [duplicate] on the network using the same Name/IP Address. In that case the Device Name was changed to iMac (2).

I have tried to edit the Device Name under Sharing in System Preferences - but the system changes it back to some other "random" number

Interestingly it says:

Computer Name: iMac (13)

Computers on your local network can access your computer at: iMac-12.local

Any ideas what is happening ? [I have noticed a few other folks (on other forums have encountered the same problem - although no solution as yet!]

Many Thanks

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Hmmm... I have had up to 8 erroneous iMacs in my shared folder in Finder. Down to just two after a lot of fiddling (rebooting devices, deleting plist files, changing network settings, network names, change to static IP, etc...) - still can't get rid of all of the erroneous iMacs. Looking back on threads, it looks like this has been a problem even before Yosemite release.

Let's hope Apple sorts it out soon.

Yeah well mine is back too (back up to 3). I have absolutely no desire to do any major fiddling around. This was not an issue with Mavericks - never saw it before. I suppose until Apple gets that update out, I will just live with it and every once in a while go back in and rename my computer in the sharing folder. As long as it isn't interfering with anything, at this point it is just an annoyance factor.

I filed a bug report with Apple, and they asked me to send them some logging information; however, although my Shared section on my Finder window listed 7 occurrences of my computer, and my computer name had changed to something like "My Computer (7)" --- I couldn't get more instances to show up, and therefore my log was probably useless.

If you all can replicate the problem (and have yet more instances show up), I would suggest you do what Apple wanted me to do and enable verbose logging while you replicate the problem, then file a bug report and send them the logs.

To enable verbose logging (and disable syslog quota):

sudo /usr/sbin/discoveryutil loglevel Everything

sudo syslog -c discoveryd -d

Then replicate the problem.

Then collect the logs from the system using:

sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/SystemConfiguration.framework/Resources/get-mobility -info

Attach the resulting mobility-info* file to a new bug at https://bugreport.apple.com

To put your logging back to normal:

sudo /usr/sbin/discoveryutil loglevel Basic

The more bugs they get, the higher priority; and the more useful info like this, the likelier they will be able to fix it.

I tried to uncheck the Bonjour Computer from the sidebar in the Finder preferences, and the list of "computer (xx)" disappears even if it is still present in the "network" folder. I also renamed my computer from Pluto to Plutone in the sharing option and the list of "computer (xx)" continues keeping the old name (Pluto (xx))

So another update

Up until last week when selecting Computers on my AppleTV I could see about 8 instances of my iMAC (pot luck finding the one that worked!)

(as also observed using the Bonjour Browser that I had downloaded - useful utility)

Browser here:

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/13388/bonjour-browser

I decided to switch off Home sharing in iTunes (File->Home Sharing-> Turn Off Home Sharing)

I then restarted the Discoveryd from the CLI (Terminal) by running:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

then

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

I then went round and power cycled all of my Airport Express and Apple TVs (as they run Sleep Proxy)

About Wake on Demand and Bonjour Sleep Proxy - Apple Support

I then re-activated Home Sharing in iTunes

Since then the problem has not returned (several days now)

Only one entry in the Devices List and only one Computer shown on Apple TV!

So not sure why this has fixed it - but this is the first time I had rebooted the Access Points and the Apple TVs since upgrading to Yosemite

Fingers crossed - it seems to have fixed my problem...

Cheers

So after almost a week the problem has resurfaced......!!

I suspect that restarting my Apple TVs and Airport Express (APs) will clean this up for a few days..

Have 5 entries showing up in Home Sharing... again

So it looks like something that is a fundamental bug in Yosemite..

I'm afraid to report that the problem has also resurfaced on my Mac. 😟
