Yosemite - could not load internet accounts preference pane - same for icloud - mail not running

After Up-Grade to Yosemite 10.10:

  • Mail not working
  • Preferences Error Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane
  • Preferences Error Could not load iCloud Accounts preference pane

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------

Had several issues when upgrading from Mountain Lion to Yosemite 10.10. Finally it seemed to work. When starting Mail, I tried to restore data from Time Machine (did a back-up under Mountain Lion immediately before up-grading to Yosemite). This ran for over 2 h when I suddenly noticed that "Mail quit unexpectedly. Since then I cannot work with Mail at all.

I read on the forum that many people have issues with Mail in Yossemite but apparently it's different from what I am experiencing, and it seems that none of the proposed solutions work for me.

I can start Mail, but I will only see the bar on top of the screen. Mail "Preferences" remains grey (= cannot click).

When choosing Mail "Accounts", System Preferences opens and then I get the "Preferences Error Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane."

I noticed then that I get a similar error when clicking "iCloud" in System Preferences: "Preferences Error Could not load iCloud Accounts preference pane."

I can open "Internet Accounts" and "iCloud" in System Preferences when I log in as a guest without any errors, but as soon as I log in with my user name, I get the same errors.

As suggested elsewhere in this forum, I removed the com.apple.mail-shared.plist in library and tried the same with com.apple.internetaccounts.plist.

I've spent hours on this and find this increasingly frustrating. I would try another new installation of Yosemite, if only I could be confident it would work this time...

Any advice how to solve this will be appreciated!

Thanks smarty77 ! This solved my problem, too.

I did one thing different than you. Rather than deleting the V2 folder, I put it back into it's place, and overwrote the newly generated one AFTER successfully opening the Internet Accounts preference pane, and deleting the offending Gmail account.

Doing that solved the problem with the Internet Accounts preference pane, and I didn't lose any email, or have to set up the accounts again. All I had to do was re-enter the password for the Gmail account, and everything worked fine again.

So here is my complete solution, with the help of smarty77's original post. I never would have made it without your solution.

  1. Move the V2 folder in ~/Library/Mail/ to the desktop.
  2. You can now open the Internet Accounts preference pane in System Preferences.
  3. Delete the offending Gmail account.
  4. Re-start Mail.
  5. Put the V2 folder back in its place, overwriting the new one that the system has generated.
  6. Quit and reopen Mail. You will be required to re-enter your email password 2x. Once for the incoming mail, and once for outgoing mail.
  7. After that, you will be up and running again, without losing any of your email. And you will still be able to open the Internet Accounts preference pane, problem solved.

Oh my goodness! Just for giggles I tried something a little bit different, since my other Mac just started doing the same thing. AND, I found a solution that is the easiest one yet!

  1. Close Mail, if it is open (I'm not even sure this step is necessary, but it's what I did, so I put it here).
  2. Move the V2 folder in ~/Library/Mail/ to the desktop.
  3. Internet Accounts will now be able to open.
  4. DON'T need to delete anything, even the offending Gmail account.
  5. Move the V2 folder back into ~/Library/Mail/.

That's ALL. You can now go back into Internet Accounts at any time, and you didn't lose any of your email, or any of your settings. Now aren't you proud of yourself?!

Renaming the folder ~/Library/Application Support/iCloud/Accounts (or presumably move to Trash) fixed:

Preferences Unable to Open Internet Accounts Pane error on Yosemite (10.10.5).

In my case, "iCloud" would open, however "Internet Accounts" would not open and Preferences displayed an error message.

Note: I had previously moved the following to Trash (note sure if this step was necessary or not, but it didn't resolve the problem)

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetaccounts.plist

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.internetaccounts

Thanks to paddyiyer for documenting.

I had a similar issue when going to Internet Accounts or iCloud preferences.

Looking in /var/log/system.log I had these error messages:

Nov 18 12:09:20 MacBook-Pro.local accountsd[6066]: CoreData: error: (11) Fatal error. The database at /Users/username/Library/Accounts/Accounts3.sqlite is corrupted. SQLite error code:11, 'database disk image is malformed'

Nov 18 12:09:20 MacBook-Pro.local accountsd[6066]: Core Data: error: -executeRequest: encountered exception = Fatal error. The database at /Users/username/Library/Accounts/Accounts3.sqlite is corrupted. SQLite error code:11, 'database disk image is malformed' with userInfo = {

NSFilePath = "/Users/username/Library/Accounts/Accounts3.sqlite";

NSSQLiteErrorDomain = 11;

}

What I did was remove the file: /Users/<username>/Library/Accounts/Accounts3.sqlite, and then it opened up - best of all it remembered all my accounts (I'm guessing from a backup it keeps internally), so once that was done I rebooted to be sure, and things have been OK since.
