Yosemite - could not load internet accounts preference pane - same for icloud - mail not running

After Up-Grade to Yosemite 10.10:

  • Mail not working
  • Preferences Error Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane
  • Preferences Error Could not load iCloud Accounts preference pane

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------

Had several issues when upgrading from Mountain Lion to Yosemite 10.10. Finally it seemed to work. When starting Mail, I tried to restore data from Time Machine (did a back-up under Mountain Lion immediately before up-grading to Yosemite). This ran for over 2 h when I suddenly noticed that "Mail quit unexpectedly. Since then I cannot work with Mail at all.

I read on the forum that many people have issues with Mail in Yossemite but apparently it's different from what I am experiencing, and it seems that none of the proposed solutions work for me.

I can start Mail, but I will only see the bar on top of the screen. Mail "Preferences" remains grey (= cannot click).

When choosing Mail "Accounts", System Preferences opens and then I get the "Preferences Error Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane."

I noticed then that I get a similar error when clicking "iCloud" in System Preferences: "Preferences Error Could not load iCloud Accounts preference pane."

I can open "Internet Accounts" and "iCloud" in System Preferences when I log in as a guest without any errors, but as soon as I log in with my user name, I get the same errors.

As suggested elsewhere in this forum, I removed the com.apple.mail-shared.plist in library and tried the same with com.apple.internetaccounts.plist.

I've spent hours on this and find this increasingly frustrating. I would try another new installation of Yosemite, if only I could be confident it would work this time...

Any advice how to solve this will be appreciated!

Lacking other options, I did another clean install of Yosemite over night according to How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite.

I did not use FindMyMac or iCloudKeyChain yet as others reported some problems with that.

Then I did not immediately restore data from Time Machine, but instead started up the brand new Yosemite first, then used the Migration Assistant to import all my old files and settings.

Very time consuming (my goodness, 2.5 days since the first attempt...) but for now everything seems to work fine including Mail, Internet Accounts etc.

I like everything so far 🙂 Fingers crossed...

Hey Sage,

Glad you got it fixed!

I had exactly the same problems, but found this solution on another thread courtesy of Paul Pharoah which saved the trouble of another clean install and seems to have fixed everything 🙂. It appears the problem lies somewhere in the mail account settings.

"I 've had the same problem today and tried lots of the suggested solutions around, all without success until....

1. I moved all the files in ~/Library/Mail/V2 to the desktop

2. Deleted the folder

3. Deleted my two email accounts (Gmail and exchange server) using System Preferences>Internet Accounts

4. Re-started Mail. It now re-started as if for the first time and asked me to re-input my mail accounts which I did.

5. Mail up and running again."

from thread: Re: Yosemite mail crash

Cheers!

Solution at my system:

prior to yosemite installation, I moved my folder /users/<myusername>/Library/mail to /volumes/MyData/Library/mail and then place an alias (symbolic link) in the original /users/<myusername>/Library/mail place.

It seems that this irritated mail.app

After deleting the symbolic link (alias) and reastarting mail, all problems were solved. Mail created it's own folder again and started flawlessly. After that, I moved all my files from /volumes/MyData/Library/mail back to /users/<myusername>/Library/mail and I was able to access my former mails again.

Try this. This will be faster than a clean install.

I just had this problem. The Internet Accounts Preferences Pane and iCloud Preferences Pane would not load and Mail would open but not display a viewer window or any option to see my email. After playing with Preferences it even had my Messages app only displaying iMessage Texts and no Buddies list.

I pulled out the V2 folder to the desktop and started up mail and it started working again. It re-downloaded all my IMAP mail and I had to reactivate some accounts, but it was all there. I have to reactivate rules one I finish importing (with the Mail import function) all my sort mailboxes from the old v2.

The upside is it gave me a new Mail folder that has no legacy crud slowing it down. The mail setup is a lot faster. I was just afraid of loosing 14 years of email, but luckily this fixed it. The Preferences Pane and Messages is back to normal. The Mail folder is also smaller because old versions had odd archives like lost + Found Mail which are still in my Time Machine backups and I should archive somewhere else.

I hope someone here can help me. I've spent most of today trying to figure out why my mail app is not working on my MAC Book Pro. I'm generally computer literate however I cannot seem to find the "v2" file referenced in the messages above- more specifically the last one. I cannot find this file either /users/<myusername>/Library/mail . There just is no "mail" folder under my library. I'm getting the error message "could not load internet accounts..."

Can someone please help me with this?

Perhaps it should be mentioned that I did a little 'cleaning' with "Clean My Mac 2" today....

Check your sort order in the window list view as that may make it easier to find and then sort by name. I'm not sure what view you are using but the folder view can be a pair to track thing down in.

Then, check the Trash to see if the "Mail" folder was moved there. Not sure why that would happen, but you never know.

Last you could open a window and search for "Mail" with all visibilities in case the folder became invisable. The application Deeper could also help you make hidden folders visable. http://www.titanium.free.fr/

The other hope would you have a Time Machine backup and can restore your "Mail" folder from that.

Hi, you should not delete the whole v2 folder, first Quit Mail, then delete only the Envelope Index files in that folder, then restart Mail and Mail will start importing itself and recreating the Envelope Index files. This solved it for us.

To access the Library folders: press ALT and also Menu Go: by pressing ALT the item Library shows in the list. Then should open Mail folder/v2
