How do I turn off autoplay of video content in Safari?

All very helpful, of course, and many thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions.

But as a literal "shout" out to Apple: It is RIDICULOUS that there is not an easy way in Safari to turn off all video autoplay. No one should have to take all the steps described, plus use 3rd-party software, in order to accomplish this. It's not as if there is an infinite number of formats or protocols, not to mention the page code always clues you in there is video or autoplay of media, in a way that is clearly detectable.

I'm also fed up with there being no easy way to stop this. Though to be fair, I'm also fed up with the sites that do this. In my opinion, frankly, considering ISPs are increasingly setting limits on the amount of data users may download each month, any kind of media autoplay should be prohibited internet-wide, unless users opt-in and agree to it. The default should be opt-out. Sites don't automatically have the right to stream large amounts of data if it will potentially cost users money.

But I digress....because NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN OFF VIDEO AUTOPLAY IN SAFARI IS A PROBLEM APPLE NEEDS TO FIX, JUST AS GOOGLE AND FIREFOX ALREADY HAVE!!!!

C'mon, Apple, you are falling behind - we expect better from what used to be the best company for innovation. What has happened to you?

I have hunted and hunted for a way to stop $#$%#$% macworld auto play videos and this FINALLY seems to have done the trick.

I have installed countless content blockers and ad blockers to try to accomplish this. THANK YOU!

but I enable DEVELOP in MENU BAR and then always have to DISABLE ALL EXTENSIONS to see websites I need to get all from just to function, like my bank,etc.

I made the MISTAKE of selecting TRUST for Adobe Flash Player on one website when I always click NO/CANCEL so as NOT to allow flash to play

Well now I can NOT UN-TRUST IT

I have gone into SAFARI>PREF>SECURITY>Plug-In Settings and UNCHECKED Adobe Flash but with Disable All Extensions....still get autoplay Ads from Ad Sense, others.

It's a SHAME that Apple can NOT give us total control over Safari because honestly, a LOT OF PEOPLE do NOT want AUTO PLAY ANYTHING let alone ADS

I never visit www.forbes.com because it always tries to put up a ad, and I always have ad blockers on my iPad/iPhone and I don't get to read the article....well

I am so OCD about ads, IF I watch TV, I use the MUTE BUTTON on the remote ALOT because I want to watch what I am watching, not commercials

When I started with computers....dial up 110 baud modems, everything was text only....we had BBS'es that we dialed into.....NO ADS, just talk/discussions/etc

I honestly miss those simpler days when we were not bombarded with pop ups and auto play anything.......

AFAICT, this fix for Safari in Yosemite is utterly useless un El Capitan:

"1. In the Advanced tab, set "Stop plug-ins to save power". (OK, done!)

"2. In the Security tab, set "Allow Plug-ins" by Internet Plug-ins... " (Whaaa...?? - where is this "by Internet Plug-ins" ?!?!? - the only choice I can find there is "Plug-in Settings...", which when clicked, only opens settings for the plug-in "Flip4Mac 3.3.7.3" - those settings apparently do absolutely NOTHING, AFAICT, regardless of which settings are selected/deselected & which options are chosen).

I find the MacWorld.com autoplay video very annoying. Thanks to this discussion I simply blocked brightcove.net in uBlock Origin in Chrome browser, per below image. Worked! Thank you.

I added my own filters in Adblock Plus that look like this:

"*cnn.com*mp4|"

"*turner.com*mp4|"

and that seemed to improve the situation dramatically.

No, doesn't work on CNN.
