iPad Air 2 WiFi Issues

I'm having WiFi connectivity issues on my new iPad Air 2 (WiFi only). I'm having to turn WiFi off and on to reset my connection. Restarting and restoring hasn't fixed the issue.

So this blog ha been going for two years and still no fix.

come on Apple step up to this issue. It's a real pain.

I tested it with and without the smart cover, on the 5GHz band connected to Linksys EA4500 bridging to Verizon FiOS Actiontec router. No luck - still get a "still connected but no internet" issue.


I just picked up a Verizon SIM, up until now I had an inactive apple SIM. Perhaps that will work better - maybe its an issue of waking up and first trying to connect to cellular and getting hung on that process. I've never woke the iPad up and waited around for a few minutes to see if I get reconnected. Also, I've only tried the toggle to get reconnected, rather than release/renew IP address. I complete shot in the dark, but perhaps this issue is tied to the new power saving measures on the iPad -- it won't keep the connection alive and certain routers will drop the IP address after a period of inactivity.

Myself, and a couple other people on this thread have had success with non-Linksys routers. I am OK on the airport extreme at work. Another poster a few pages back was OK with DLINK but had issues with his Linksys. In my case, my Linksys is running in bridge mode to a FiOS Actiontec Ver F router that is required by FiOS, whereas the other poster had the same router running in a traditional manner.


I had a thread with a list I consolidated on page 6 of this thread from a few posters about routers that were good or were not good.

I have a D-LINK DIR 655 router at home, and my new iPad Air 2 does not work well with it. Hard to get it to connect, and it drops the connection, even when actively using it. Also disconnects when it goes into sleep and does not reconnect upon wake. However, for some reason it works great in the office. Not sure what router we have in office. And it works well if I use my iPhone hot spot connection. As I mentioned in earlier posts, my iPhone, new Macbook, and older iPad works just fine at home.

I just read this entire thread. Today, I picked up an new iPad Air 2 and it works great - NO wifi problems at all!


The common thread here appears to be using routers other than those made by Apple. I've tried NetGear and Linksys in the past - they're a pain in the butt - VERY finicky about settings. I have no idea how to change settings on a router, nor do I wish to lean! When I had trouble a few years ago, I finally just went to a local Apple Store and bought an Apple Extreme router. I have some reception trouble in my house - router/modem is in the basement and where I use it is at the other end of the house on the first floor - so years ago, I purchased an Apple AirPort Express. If one has an Apple household, these just plain work better and are far more reliable. Yes, more expensive, but my time and level of stress are very valuable to me, too!


I think the problem is your router. Also, some ISP's won't work when they detect a new device on the network. In the past, I sometimes had to call my ISP and have then "add" the new device.

I really like the Apple products but I hope we don't have to buy an airport express to connect them to Internet.

The routers that are failing today with the Air 2 work fine with all the other mobile devices.

My router configuration is pretty standard, auto channel, auto bandwidth, WPA2 , lot of settings are in default or auto. I've been using my Linksys router for ~2 years without any problem (until the Air 2), with some Android phones, iphones, Windows laptop, macbooks, etc.

I think the issue is in the Air 2, not in the router.

iPad Air 2 problem: 2.4ghz very slow dropped connections. 5ghz very fast actually faster than my hardwire but not connection every lasted longer than 30 minutes. Meanwhile, my iPad3 and iPhone 4s worked fine on my Linksys EA4500. I tried all the suggestions and none of them worked:

  1. Reset network settings
  2. Disabled Wi-Fi Networking Services
  3. Set Custom DNS
  4. Used static ip
  5. removed cover
  6. Turned off auto-lock
  7. set so closing cover didn't lock

Anytime I wanted the internet I'd fire up Speedtest app. If it couldn't find a server within a couple of seconds I'd go to setting and turn wifi off and on. Then it work for a short period of time. Finally, in frustration contacted Apple Care of a refund. There answer was go to the Apple store. The Apple Store gave me a new iPad. They claim they've heard no complains about this problem.


I've had the new iPad for 24 hours. It is more stable. It took a couple of hours to lose the connection to 5ghz the first time. I plugged it overnight and it was still connected this morning. I lost a connection a couple of times before noon. The 5ghz is still very fast. At lunch time, I connected to my 2.4ghz. The download speed is about 30-40% of my other devices the upload speed is the same. It is still connected to the 2.4ghz after 8 hours. Clearly, this is still not working as well as it should but at least it is useable.

Ipad Air 2 as we all know is a/b/g/n/ac capable -- most routers I would guess are a/b/g/n type routers w/o the "ac". I thought I read where there was an "ac" router that reported similar drops in wifi after the Ipad Air 2 had gone to sleep --- Linksys, D-Link, Netgear have all reported issues.... the problem is with Apple not the routers ....


I would guess most users simply will not complain and put up with the occasional drops in performance... C'mon Apple step up to the plate --After all the 'core competency' of the Ipad is WIFI ....w/o WIFI it's usesless
