For the past two weeks my MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.2 has afflicted by "slow syndrome". Everything was slow: logins took up to a full minute, typing would be periodically interrupted by the spinning pizza, etc. Ouch.

-----------

FIXES THAT (FRUSTATINGLY) DIDN'T WORK

Permissions repair, safe mode boot, disconnecting from the internet, logging into a freshly created account, PRAM reset, all were unhelpful. Ouch.

-----------

DIAGNOSTICS THAT (FRUSTATINGLY) WERE UNINFORMATIVE

System logs and the system profiler were unrevealing. Ouch. Frustratingly, the "pizza" would appear even when *NO* processes were consuming memory. Ouch.

-----------

THE FIX THAT WORKED FOR ME:

Fixing users, groups, and permissions on /usr/local

-----------

WHY DID THIS CURE THE SLOWDOWN, WE WONDERS ???

It appears the slowdown may have resulted from the operating system searching a $PATH that included badly structured permissions on a huge /usr/local directory tree.

-----------

BACKGROUND: as a heavy user of MacTeX and brew, my /usr/local tree has about 200,000 files in it

-----------

WHAT WORKED, SEMI-SPECIFICALLY

(1) In "System Preferences" -> "Users & Groups", eliminate any circular references in the groups.

(2) Duplicate the /usr/local tree, rename (and eventually delete) the old tree, keep the new tree.

(3) Using "chown -R", recursively set the user and group of the new /usr/local to the "correct" values

(4) Using the finder interface, recursively set permissions in the new /usr/local to the "correct" values

(5) Make any final permissions adjustments by hand.

-----------

NO DETAILS WILL BE GIVEN: I'm not going to give detailed instructions, because I'm not sure that I know the "correct" settings! Plus, different folks use their /usr/local for different purposes.

-----------

HOPEFULLY: Some unix guru will tell us how to set /usr/local owner, groups, and permissions to "correct" settings.
