Entourage not letting me send e-mails but can recieve them...

Everytime I try and send an e-mail using entourage with my COX email account to any e-mail adress, the following error message is displayed:

Error ___________________________________
<isawex@gmail.com> relaying not allowed

Explanation ____________________________

Mail could not be sent.

Account name: "Isaac's COX E-Mail"

Error: -17099

My e-mail account was working just fine until recently when this problem started occuring. It only occurs with my COX account and will let me recieve all my email but not send any through this account. I called COX and they told me they can't help me with this problem other then going over the correct incoming/outgoing server names, which I confirmed are correct.

I have searched for this error code on google and on these forums but could not find anything about it...anyone know how to fix my problem so I can send emails again?

Thanks!

(I also posted this in another forum on this site that fit more to the my topic, but I wanted to post it here too so I could get more responses)

My understanding is that if a piece of mail was
misaddressed, then Entourage can - I'm repeating what
I read - choke up and not send anything thereafter
until you eliminate the bad email.

Apparently, the standard advice for this problem is
to rebuild the Entourage database.

My other thought is to check what port is set for
smtp. 25 is the norm. Some ISP's may block that and
require 587. You can check your settings and ask your
ISP or check their docs online.

Hmmm thats very interesting...i wonder if that was the problem in entourage. Although I like entourage, I think I'm starting to like mail a little more just because it seems to run better on my macbook.

But back to the topic...I tried 587 as the outgoing port and it delayed a little when sending a test email so I thought it might work but unfortunantly it didn't. I'll try calling cox and asking them what the port should be set to, because I think that could very well be the problem but I'm not really sure. The first time I called them they didn't mention anything about it since they don't "support" apple mail, but its worth another try.

Thanks for your help!

Any more ideas/fixes would be great--thanks!

Ok I'll explain my sittuation because it has gotten more and more confusing as more posts are being written under my topic.

COX is a internet/cable provider in the san diego area. I have internet service through them in san diego at my family's home, but I currently live in San Francisco because I am going to college here. I am trying to get my COX email to run into my apple mail program here in san francisco and I am able to recieve emails through COX, but not send them to anyone. When I try and send emails through the cox server (smtp.west.cox.net) I get the error message(listed in the first post)

At home in San Diego, Cox was running through outlook express but now since I'm in SF I am trying to run it through mail.

I am on my college's network which is the only one thats not password protected near me. This is the network it always connects to, and the only one I use.

I checked the set-up page for server settings and called cox who verified my info was correct.

Hope that was a little more understandable...thanks for your help!

Okay that's your problem. You can't do that. I assume you're not using COX in San Francisco correct? I do the same thing at work. I have an ISP at home and a different one at work. I can receive emails for my home account but can't send them through while at work.

When you're sending outgoing emails it's using the IPS you're currently connected with and not the ISP that's been set up and since that's the case the email fails on authentication because you don't have any authority to use there outgoing servers.

Does COX have web based email? You can use that or get some freebie and use it while away. You can still receive through your COX but you'll have to use web based to send while you're away. Trust me when you go home you'll be back to working again.

ah ha!! on the college network you say.. speak to the tech support there. Very often college, library and company wireless networks, does NOT at all allow any smtp acces at all!!

When Im at my college, i have to send mail through webmail. And actually the port for recieving mail is closed to, so I read my mails through webmail acces as well.

Doesnt COX have a webmail accces to your account?

Probably there is notheing wrong with your settings then.

Go to a friends house with a wireless network that is not protected/closed(except by a password maybe)

No I am not using COX here in San Francisco. Ohhhh okay.Your sittuation seems identical to mine. Why is that though? So let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly: So basicly, since I'm not using my IP adress from my home computer or ISP from San Diego, it cannot authorize me to send emails unless I'm in San Diego? ISP is sort of confusing to me. I mean it makes sense to me, but I dont understand why COX didnt tell me that right off the bat when I called them and told them the exact same sittuation.

Yes COX has webmail, but I was trying to avoid using it since I always think it's more efficient for me at least, to access all of my email through one program, rather then logging into a couple different websites.

Thank you so much for your help! This pretty much answers the question I've been trying to answer for about a month now.

Thanks again!

Hmmm yah that would make sense if it was blocked like that. I would call tech support here but since I go to a private university, I'm almost positive they will charge me for a problem like this.

I do have webmail which I guess I'll have to use to send emails.

Thanks for your help!
