MacBook Pro is really slow after yosemite update.

Hi my mbp 2011 model runs extremely slow after the yosemite update. All programs take forever to open and I constantly get the spinning rainbow wheel.

Please help me!!!

Hi I have a MBP 15in early 2011 model but have not updated it yet fearing what you have just told me. It might be caused by the lower hardware specs of 2011 models or due to Yosemite working in the background. I have seen people talking about Yosemite indexing their computers which takes time and also a decent amount of CPU.

I experience the same thing. i did a complete fresh reinstall and even tried to run Yosemite without additional installations of pages etc. But after a few days my macbook got EXTREMLY slow.

I had no option but to reinstall Mavericks and now everything is back to normal.

One should not judge the book by its cover. Yeah, Yosemite looks nice but my god, it has been the worst update ever....

Having read numerous posts about this I ended up taking my Late 2011 MBP to Apple genius bar. They ran a test and discovered there was a software issue that was causing my MBP to run slow, and frustratingly it was intermittent, but too annoying.

They ended up scrubbing the hard drive and reinstalling Yosemite and it is like I HAVE A NEW COMPUTER!

Unfortunately I did not do a great job of backing up and alas I lost some home movie files which I thought were kept in iTunes. Key lessons learned.

1. If you have a problem go to Apple

2. Make sure you back up everything.

3. The guy at Apple reckons Clean My Mac might have cause the problem. (Who knows) But I am know reluctant to use it again.

I found some interesting solutions online, and surprisingly enough turning off transparent windows and effects made my computer MUCH faster. It's like magic! For the record, I have 2010 MacBook Pro, 4GB RAM, 2.4GHz, Core i5.

There are some other very simple tips to try before any drastic measures here: http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/24/speed-up-os-x-yosemite-mac/

Perhaps, this will help someone?

Apr 18, 2015 2:51 PM in response to Esenbek

I have a macbook pro mid2010. When I updated to Yosemite also had the same problem. My Mac became so slow and frustrating. I called Apple Support and they guided me through several clean up functions and although the speed improved a bit it didn't solve the problem really. In the end I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB (I believe that's the maximum my Mac can hold) and hey bingo my old mac is back!. Despite what Apple say, 4GB is just not enough for Yosemite.

So if you've tried everything else then just upgrade your RAM. It's very easy to replace - if I can do it, anyone can do it. Here's the link showing what RAM you need (specs etc.) and removal and installations instructions MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support

I know everyone has different experiences and all, but this piece of **** Mac I have to use at work (2011 Macbook Pro) has caused more problems in a year than I've had with Windows machines for many many years. My own laptop running Windows 8.1 has ZERO issues, it's fast, it's reliable, it never crashes, and Windows is a **** of lot nicer to use that OS X.

This Macbook has had to have the screen replaced once, it just got back from repair today because when I turned it on I just had a black screen. They took it apart, couldn't find a problem, then they put it together and it just worked again. It's a joke, I try to get my work done but running anything more than 3 programmes and everything is painfully slow.

The day I can work on a Windows machine again in my job will be a VERY happy day.

Hi i'm using early 2011 mac and i have personally tried snowleopard, mountain lion, mavericks, and yosemite in short few years.

my mavericks finally crashed yesterday after a year of SLOWNESS ever sinced i "upgraded" from a mountain lion

I have just installed yosemite before I slept and this morning when I woke up. I was amazed to find that yosemite works like a breeze. I find that it is at least as fast as mountain lion, if not faster.

Wifi detection and connection used to take at least 10 seconds after i opened the flap (mavericks). but for yosemite, it only took 3 seconds. Surfing on safari, opening programs/apps was a breeze. I used to wait for the ******* colourful ball to spin at least 5 secs.

What i really did is I wiped out the whole 320HDD and did a clean state install of yosemite. If you were "upgrade" from maverick directly, chances are it's going to get slower. Because maverick ***** and no way adding files to it will make it faster.

MacBook Pro is really slow after yosemite update.
