iPad air 2 pop noise

My iPad Air 2 randomly has a "Pop Noise" out of the speaker. it happens randomly about once or twice a day when touching the screen or pressing a button. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Could it be a software issue or has it more likely to do with the hardware?

The iPhone charger has exactly the same voltage output as the iPad charger (5 Volts DC). It does have a lower current output though (1Amp as opposed to 2Amps) so it will charge the battery more slowly. The eventual charge accumulation will be pretty much the same but charge rate is important to battery health and cycle life. I'm sure the Apple design engineers rated the charger appropriately and due to the intermittent nature of this fault I'd recommend using it for a week or so before making any assumptions. Please do report back.

Actually I was implying the opposite but just learnt that new research does suggest fast charging may be better than slow charging for Lithium Ion batteries: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2607273/for-lithium-ion-batteries-to-last-s low-charging-isnt-the-answer.html

Not sure what the actual magnitude of this effect is. I wouldn't worry too much considering the expected life cycle of iPads is only a few years before new iOS releases require upgrade of the hardware. My iPad 2 was fine until I upgraded to iOS 7. Then it was practically unusable due to lack of RAM. But that's a different rant.

iCronos, so far (never say never) my Air 2 produces the noise only when speakers volume is above zero.

After the 8.1.1 iOS update the noise disappeared completely for some days, then it was back.

In my case the battery level doesn't make a difference at all. I get these pops at all levels between 100% and 5%.

Unfortunately, this issue is not that obvious like the yellow tint screen issue we saw in the Air 1 last year - I returned two Air 1 because of that and the frequent app crashes due to the lack of RAM. I guess this time the popping noise won't be the primary reason why people contact the support. The case resonance is more obvious.

Okay... but mine was just popping due to an electrical arcing near or at the location of the RAM chips and Processor. The sound did not come from my speakers therefore I returned the first one then the second one and then the third one for a refund. I was happier after I got my refund than the day I received a defective iPad Air 2. From glitchy iOS and OS software to glitchy iPads whats next? Apple Watches that cannot tell time.

I am already reading stories about the company that supplies the Sapphire glass cannot not produce the glass right. Just like I read that Apple was having production issues with the iPad Air 2 before it came out. I bought one because I trusted that Apple resolved the problems but I was fooled.

They deny it when I call Apple care and they Deny it at the store level. It really makes Apple look incompetent and lacking compassion, but hey Deny it it and they will come. Happy holidays everyone and enjoy!!!

To me, it almost sounds like the speakers are getting a short burst of electricity causing the loud pop/crack.

Some people think it can't be coming from the speakers because they have it on mute, but if you give a speaker electricity, it's going to make noise whether you have your device set on mute or not...

The cause of this quick burst of electricity is still unknown to me, could be arching, bad grounding, static electricity build up, ect.

YYeah the faster the better. the first iPad mini's had 5 watt adapters And it took for ever to charge Even while in airplane mode (speeds up the charging). Then all iPads came out with the 10 watt adapters. I use those for my iPhone 6's as well. The older iPads used a 12 watt adapter. Apple found the 10 watt was better for all their iPads and cheaper to make. So if you want to maximize your battery life use the 10 watt adapter after 10-5% to a full uninterrupted charge In airplane mode. It will charge your iDevice in half the time in most cases.

I Travel a lot so using several adapters is a hassle So I use the 10 watt adapter for all my iDevices and all is good. I still have two iPhone 4's and I use the 12 watt with those just because I like to stay consistent with my iDevises.

AS long as you use an Apple adapter 10 watt and lower your golden for I Devices.

My Air 2 is a week 35 (September) production, I have had it for three weeks. Call it what you want "snap/crackle/pop", I have experienced the issue 6 or 7 times. Yesterday afternoon was the most recent event. Called Apple support and they stated they have not heard of this issue, but were very helpful setting up an appointment for exchange. I only found this discussion group this morning and guess I am not alone. $500; strange intermitant noise; long term purchase; manufacturer support denies to have ever heard of the issue; no extended warranty offered if a software issue = back to manufacturer It goes.

iCronos, I know how disappointing that is. I don't even search for flaws but some of these unwanted "features" are just too obvious to be overlooked.

It's interesting that you've got three of them with the same issue. Hard to believe that this is just a coincidence, regarding how many units are being produced each week. Mine for instance is production week 43, jartg got week 35 that's quite a bunch of units.

AApple denies it Does not mean it is not a problem. They deny a lot of issues from battery issues to home button problems and all those issues turned out to be recalls after the next upgrade of those devices. Just like the RAM chip set in the MBA's. That is how they do it. If I get a bad product Apple or LG, etc., I return it. I do not go for buying something that does not work and I have to send it any where to be repaired. If it is broke I get a replacement or refund. I have a small business and cannot afford to update to a flawed device. We have first gen 20 iPad Air's some bought from Apple Stores some bought from authorized dealers at a discount. No problems with any of those. So we will wait until the next fical year to upgrade. I will probably wait on the watch too due to the sapphire glass issue. I feel bad for anyone that Apple does not take care of their needs. I know they have extended the return days to 30 days if you bought it after Nov. 1st., due to their holiday return policy, but the poor folks that bought at release date They have to work the system to fix it.

Although, with that said, I always research before I buy any electronics but the reviews of Apple products, in my opinion, are hard to get an unbiased review. That is why I also consult with the IT company that supports my company. I bought this gen of iPad for my son for college. The day it was dilevered to the day we returned the third one they all popped (one was bought online and delivered to the house) and when i gave it to my IT guy he suggested to return it because the arcing pop was releasing a low amount of Electricity. He is going to buy one and tear it down, as he does with all products they support, I look forward to what he says. Any way you look at it If it is speaker arcing it is not supposed to do that. I also noticed screen issues too. From not responding to the touch to screen going black at times during graphic intense games and software. (Per my son). So I returned it twice then on the third I got a refund bought him an Early 2014 i7, 8GB RAM, MacBook Air and it is working well for him. Everything worked out for the best. Happy Turkey day and be well.

I just found out that in England and Wales everything you buy comes with a 6 year warranty from the seller. The devil is in the small prints.

http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/

So, despite Apple saying they offer a 1 year warranty, if you buy directly from them (i.e. they are the seller) you automatically get a 6 years Apple warranty!

Then I don't understand why John Lewis offers a two year warranty (and promotionally up to 3) when they should know they are liable for six years.

Nov 28, 2014 7:41 AM in response to Mais78

Well, it's not that simple. The law states that you have the right to return an item for up to 6 years, if you can prove it has an inherent fault, present at the time of manufacture and you would reasonably expect the item to last longer than 6 years. I think it is quite clear that you cannot reasonably expect consumer electronics to last for 6 years. It is almost certain that kind of case would go through the legal system and the end result might be anyone's guess.

This is my SECOND iPad Air 2 in the last 3 weeks. I exchanged the first one at Best Buy after 2 weeks due the the popping and crackling problems. Not only am I having the same problem, but now I have absolutely no sound!! And this is after only 2 days!!! Nothing seems to solve the problem. I've had Apple products since 1984 with absolutely no problems whatsoever. This is a first.
