keypad during FaceTime call?
So if I make a FaceTime call on my iMac via my iPhone 6, where's my keypad?
Did they seriously forget to include that little bit of functionality?
iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Sorry for the yelling here but really Apple ➖! Here is the issue, you make a call and then try to use the keypad, I did just this. NOTHING BLOODY HAPPENS!!! Of course reading the smarty pants on this forum who say it's obvious NO IT'S NOT as the window that pops is not in focus UNTIL YOU CLICK ON IT.
So in summary to use the keypad click on call window first and then you can use the keypad. This seems like a major fail UI wise, Apple trying to be minimalist but confusing the sh*^( out of the majority of users. I'm pretty savvy user with but this stumped me so the vast majority of users will indeed think there is no keypad. Heck apple just hide it by default but add a little button that forces us to get the window in to focus so we can use our physical keyboards or better still the trackpad / mouse and a virtual one.
You do not have to press Mute - anywhere within the call window will do. I will admit that a button to reveal the keyboard on screen would have been nice and having users realize this feature much easier.
And if anyone knows how to automatically mute e.g. iTunes when receiving/making calls, they´ll make my day 🙂
Hey DJ - I completely agree that it looks like a missing feature (no ability to 'pop up' the keypad the way you can on an iPhone) as well as being a documentation bug (not explaining how to do something as common as using "phone keys" to navigate during a call).
You can use the normal number keys above the main keyboard instead of the number pad. The number pad (on my keyboard at least) is terrible for making phone calls because it numbers form the bottom upwards. Phones are numbered from the top downwards.
Clicking on the call window in order to transfer keyboard input focus to the FaceTime call is... understandable after-the-fact for me as a programmer, but I definitely didn't guess it was necessary when I was making my call.
If it was simple to think of clicking the FaceTime 'call' and then then to use the keyboard, I'm sure Apple Support would have thought of it in the first place. 😉
I agree that being able to make calls from mac is a very convenient feature but Apple really forgot to add a keypad which would be more intuitive
answered already, but just type the number keys on your keypad. Don't need to hit mute. There's no traditional phone keypad.
any idea how to get back to the computer's phone connection once you've gone over to the phone?
The solution is to press the CMD + Number
It only works when the FaceTime application is the active application. So if your waiting and working in an other application you have to go back to FaceTime.
Sorry COMMAND isn't necessary
I understand how to use the mac numeric keyboard to enter things like code, but how to enter keys like #?
For example, I call into a conference. The robot says to enter my conference ID and pound. How do I enter the pound? I read the Help article, no mention of non-numeric keys.
:-) simple and direct. As John said :-). On Mac everything is keeping simple and minimalist, so when I don't find something, I stop to think for a few minutes to find the simplest possible way, of course :-), I always come to the community :-)
So to be able to use the Mac keyboard number keys and for any input into the call the facetime app needs to be in focus meaning at the top menu bar you see FaceTime menu bar. That being said after FaceTime is in focus you can use the Number keys on the Mac to enter numbers, if you want to enter a " # " or " * " just hold the "Shift" key and then the 3 key which has the " # ".
Hope this helps, I had the same question and after reading your question tried it out and worked just fine.
You sir, rock!!!
This is just plain lazy on Macs part. Just add a keypad to Facetime. I have tried your options and some how my phone still takes the call away from my mac. This is not a hard feature to add to facetime and should have been thought of from the beginning. Do you know what it is like to be on a call trying to press a number when you are still getting all the papers together for them. Press # for this option then that option you press your key board and it comes back saying the same notice because it didn't receive the tone. You click a drop down keyboard then you can click with your mouse or type your keyboard since it is the active program and sends along. I am reverting to my bluetooth to deal with this pull out the phone and hit the number they want to get to a live actual breathing human being. Or reach over to the desk and hit the number they want. I think I need to develop an app that replaces face time. This ticket has been going on for a long while. I want to know why have you not sent this to the developers. This is a pain in the a**. Just put the keyboard with the app.
Not only mute, but resume when the call ends would be great too.
Though at least iTunes responds to the media control keys on the keyboard so it is quick to pause and resume, but Spotify or Youtube don't.
Totally agree with your points, including the "inverted" layout of the keyboard, specially as in some cases folks memorize phone numbers / passwords based on their layout, not the actual numbers.
