Can't connect to share file from my windows XP after upgrade to Yosemite

I have set up file sharing between my iMac & windows XP, it was working fine before. After I upgrade to Yosemite, I can't access the file from my XP to iMac ! But it is ok from my iMac to XP. I have share folder on both machines share it to each other. I am using workgroup network "Mshome", no domain. In my XP I can see the iMac computer on my network, but overtime I check on it it prompt username & password. I try enter the username & password of my iMac account it won't work. Since Yosemite now don't have short username anymore. I even create a new account name to try but still not able to connect.

The previous set up I have the same account name & password for both iMac & XP, it will connect directly when I turn on the machines.

I do remember when I first setting up it, on my XP username login I need to put some different with the username, but I didn't write it down or record it. Can anyone tell me how to I connect again to my iMac ?

Thanks for you help!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

After search the internet for days, reading all the posts! I find the answer ! In your XP machine do the following

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click System and Maintenance
  4. Click Administrative Tools
  5. Double-Click Local Security Policy
  6. In the left pane, click the triangle next to Local Policy
  7. In the left pane, click Security Options
  8. In the right pane near the bottom, double-click "Network security: LAN manager authentication level"
  9. Click the drop-down box, and click "Send NTLMv2 response only"
  10. Click OK

By changing the LAN Manager authentication level to "Send NTLMv2 response only", magically everything now works as it should!

Thanks, DW1001...

I can now connect to "My Network Places/rmcinnes on iMac" from my Windows XP Sony PCG XE17 Notebook.

All documents and files on iMac 27 are accessible, for example...
on the Windows XP Notebook, navigate to \\Imac\rmcinnes\My Business\Year 2014 (Year End Documentation).

I have been trying, on and off, to make this work since upgrading to Yosemite,

I resorted to Sneaker Net until I found your notes.

So thank you, a million.

The "Send NTLMv2 response only" worked...

[I still cannot connect the iMac 27 on Yosemite to shared folders on the Windows XP Sony PCG XE17]

This is great, but these instructions are (I think) for Windows XP Pro. For Windows XP Home, you need to go into the registry...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa

Change lmcompatibilitylevel from 0 to 5, then reboot.

My XP machine now talks to my Mac Server. Yay!

Richard, DW1001,

Thanks, I was able to restore access from my Windows XP (Sony PCG-XE17 Notebook) to my iMac 27 Retina.

It would appear your approach does essentially the same thing as access via Control Panel proposed by DW1001 (29 Oct 2014, above).

Can either of you tell me how to permit my iMac 27 Retina Yosemite to access my Windows XP (Sony PCG-XE17 Notebook).

Yes, I can read and write files via Windows XP to from the iMac, but would prefer it was the other way round (for convenience) and I could access the Windows XP files from the my iMac 27 Yosemite.

Richard,

This is what I see, when I look at Shared folders on my WinXP from Yosemite.User uploaded file

There log in is correct [if I type the wrong name or password the Connection is rejected],

if I add another Shard Folder on WinXP, it will show up in the list,

if I tap on the blue Folder icon, I see this prompt...

User uploaded file

I see exactly the same response from my iMac 27 Retina and MacMini [except the MacMini does provide a list of Recommended Applications, none work].

I am at my wits end trying to figure out what the issue is here.

Any ideas are most welcome.

DW10001, How in the world did you figure this out?

Any reference for the context would help - I'm a mathematician but I am ignorant about networking protocols, so please let me know even if the reference is written simply.

I don't check this site very often, so if you would be so kind, I have a public email address you may feel free to use to reply:

*****_****_****@yahoo.com

Yours is the only reference I found to address this problem (and yes, I am going to put Win 7 or Win 10 on this machine - I am lazy and haven't done it yet). All the others (and there are many) reviewed the basic steps needed to enable networking with no mention of what to do when it doesn't work!!

Finally, I had no problems accessing the volumes on the Mac (Mac is running 10.10.x) from my Win 7 Professional (SP1) machines.
