Could not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Quicktime.Quicktime\

Could not open key HKEY LOCALMACHINE\Software\Classic\Quicktime.Quicktime\CLSID
is the error message I recieve when attempting to install the latest version of quicktime. I attempted to delete the key and other quicktime keys from the registry but I recieve this error message:
'Cannot delete Quicktime.Quicktime: Error Deleting Key'. I then tried to export the key and recieved this: 'selected branch does not exist. Make sure correct path is given.'

Any help with a solution would be greatly appreciated

ok guys here are the step by step instructions and lucky for you PrimusBodacious wrote out how i was able to do it, be careful though one person did it bad somehow and his computer is messed up the registry can get screwed easy here it is:
1) Click Start, then Run, then type regedit and press OK.
2) Open HKEY LOCALMACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Classes. Scroll down to QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp (or whatever key that you're getting an Access Denied error)
3) Right click on it (you might have to do it twice).
4) Select Permissions after ignoring any messages telling you that you don't have access
5) Once inside Permissions, click Advanced, then Owner, then click on your account, then press Apply, then OK
6) Next click Add, then Advanced, then Find Now
7) Hold down the CTRL key and click on Administrators, your own account, and SYSTEM
8) Click on Administrators, then click the Full Control checkbox. The "Read" checkbox will automatically get checked, then press Apply
9) Do this for each account. Hopefully once you do it for Administrators the others will already have Full Control checked and "Apply" will be greyed out. Press OK when you're done.
10) Next click on CLSID back in the registry editor and repeat steps 3 through 9.
11) Try installing Quicktime again and when you get another Access Denied error, note the registry key and go back and repeat steps 2 through 9 for that key.
12) Keeping trying to install Quicktime until you've resolved all the permissions for all the keys that this pathetic setup script requires
13) Eventually it will install successfully.
if you become really desperate and this dosent work back up your data on a flash drvie or external HD then re-install windows but only as a last ditch effort.

Fern - Write down the key name that's in the error message - during installation there will probably be several access denied errors and the key names may be very similar. Follow the steps to change Owner and then Permissions for each key name. Keep trying to install - it fails each time it can't access a key so you have to go through the steps for each key.

I have gone into all the HKEYS, selected permissions, full control to all names listed in the boxes, apply, re started the computer for the changes to take place. But guess what? Still cant install Itunes7 because the same message "HKEYLOCALMACHINE\software\classes\quicktimeplayerlib.quicktimeplayerapp\clsid.Verify tht you have sufficint access to that key or contact support personnel" appears. Everyone appears to have resolved the problem, but I still can't. Please help!!!!!!!

Fern - check the steps again - are you skipping step 5? Changing the Owner to your account, then pressing Apply is critical or it will appear you're changing the permissions but the changes won't be saved.

If you've followed all the steps, please type the exact error message you receive into a post in this discussion thread. The more information we have, the better we can understand apple's flawed installation process and we can find solutions.

If you want to start over completely, you can try this:

First go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Quicktime and iTunes.

Next go to the Microsoft web site below and download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Install it, run it, then uninstall Quicktime and iTunes with it, if they appear in the list.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Then try to reinstall iTunes and if you get HKEY access denied errors, go through the steps for each one.

Hi,

I followed the steps above, and they worked. For a while.

I got further into the installation then I ever have before, but then I got the following error:

User uploaded file

Same as usual, but this time when I went to change permissions, it said "access is denied" everytime i clicked "apply".

I'm basically stuck. I need to get past this and then I'll be good. I've overcame the earlier permission problems, but this one has me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey guys sorry i havent replied for a while. I am only 16 so sorry this might be confusing Also now that quicktime is installed on my computer it is difficult to re-create the problems you guys are having, my only advice is to be Sure you have done step 5 correctly after right clicking and selecting permissions select advanced then select owner and add your user name,if still it dosent fix it merely opens access to the file the folder contains so after that step (be careful on this maybe even make a copy by exporting a copy) right click and select delete it should say you do not have access to do that and then it will allow you to expand the folder and then do the regular steps (posted above) repeat them for all of the files in the folder that is specified by the error message and it should fix it. I hope this fixes the problem. this process is very repetetive and annoying but keep with it it will work. good luck
