Could not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Quicktime.Quicktime\

Could not open key HKEY LOCALMACHINE\Software\Classic\Quicktime.Quicktime\CLSID
is the error message I recieve when attempting to install the latest version of quicktime. I attempted to delete the key and other quicktime keys from the registry but I recieve this error message:
'Cannot delete Quicktime.Quicktime: Error Deleting Key'. I then tried to export the key and recieved this: 'selected branch does not exist. Make sure correct path is given.'

Any help with a solution would be greatly appreciated

hello....
After all uninstall as stated by Primus Bodacius and before re-installing verify that the account you're installing from is REALY "Administrator" (Built-in account for administering the computer/domain) and not an Administrator equivalent.
Reinstall.
After the install (if it succeeds) add the Group "Administrators" to all the keys.
Finaly, add the User that will be using iTunes to the group Administrators.
This worked for me.
Good luck

Hey guys,
Thank you very much for your emails.
After spending days banging my head against a brick wall trying to solve this problem with no luck. I finally managed to get in touch with HP (via email) and they amazingly helpful and followed many steps with me. Unfortunately I ended up having to use the destructive disc as they said I had corrupted files which were stopping the download. So that's what I did, making sure I backed up all my library of course. And guess what? I finally managed to install itunes 7 and can now listen to my Nano. Was that stressful or what? But I got there in the end.
Thanks for all of you who took the time to reply to my questions.

Dude...it's people like you that make the internet AWESOME. Your method worked FLAWLESSLY. How aweful is itunes/quicktime...

ok guys here are the step by step instructions and
lucky for you PrimusBodacious wrote out how i was
able to do it, be careful though one person did it
bad somehow and his computer is messed up the
registry can get screwed easy here it is:
1) Click Start, then Run, then type regedit and press
OK.
2) Open HKEY LOCALMACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then
Classes. Scroll down to
QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp (or whatever
key that you're getting an Access Denied error)
3) Right click on it (you might have to do it
twice).
4) Select Permissions after ignoring any messages
telling you that you don't have access
5) Once inside Permissions, click Advanced, then
Owner, then click on your account, then press Apply,
then OK
6) Next click Add, then Advanced, then Find Now
7) Hold down the CTRL key and click on
Administrators, your own account, and SYSTEM
8) Click on Administrators, then click the Full
Control checkbox. The "Read" checkbox will
automatically get checked, then press Apply
9) Do this for each account. Hopefully once you do it
for Administrators the others will already have Full
Control checked and "Apply" will be greyed out. Press
OK when you're done.
10) Next click on CLSID back in the registry editor
and repeat steps 3 through 9.
11) Try installing Quicktime again and when you get
another Access Denied error, note the registry key
and go back and repeat steps 2 through 9 for that
key.
12) Keeping trying to install Quicktime until you've
resolved all the permissions for all the keys that
this pathetic setup script requires
13) Eventually it will install successfully.
if you become really desperate and this dosent work
back up your data on a flash drvie or external HD
then re-install windows but only as a last ditch
effort.

Ethan--thanks for the great instructions, but still having problems. I successfully added permissions for 4 keys: HKEY LOCALMACHINES\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp, HKEY LOCALMACHINES\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp\CLSID, HKEY LOCALMACHINES\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp\CurVer, and HKEY LOCALMACHINES\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp.1

Now I'm getting a message that I don't have permission for HKEY LOCALMACHINES\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp.1\CLSID. Problem is, I don't see such a folder. There is no CLSID sub-folders (or any others) within HKEY LOCALMACHINES\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp.1. What should I do?Do I need to somehow create this key?
