Is the phone locked to her account or is it just iTunes, (is Find My iPhone on)

There is no way of activating the phone without the Apple ID password. Apple will not help your son circumvent the activation lock. He must get the password from his ex. Without that the phone is useless. The other option is to ask her to login to her iiCloud account and to remove the phone from find my iPhone. That will not require the divulgation of the password; she can do it herself.

I still do not understand why people insist on "sharing" Apple IDs. It just causes headaches as your son has already learned.

Yes.. They dated for 3 years and shared itunes... He switched to a galaxy 5 and did not use the 5s for about 5 months. I got it from

him to sell before the 6-6plus came out so the price would not drop. They had broken up during that 5 month time

period.. Bad breakup... He does not remember rhe password and she may have even changed it... I finally was able to reach here today and texted her the link to remove it from her iCloud and she is going to take care of it tonight... yeah me!!!

Tell your son that he is very lucky that his ex is reasonable. I have seen Apple ID "spats" in the past border on the insane, especially between exes. I know of a friend whose divorce was so acrimonious that his ex refused to to give him access to his kids photos on photostream as she controlled the account ( she removed the share function). It took a judge to order her to finally turn in the pictures. Go figure.

I always recommend each Apple user to get their own ID. There is no reason not to nowadays, especially with the new family share option.
