5K iMac HDD Upgrade

Hi all,

If I buy a 5K iMac with a 1 TB SSD, can I add a hard drive in the space where it would be on a non-SSD model and fuse the volumes later with CoreStorage? If so, what parts would I need to connect the HDD to the motherboard?
Thank you!

The only supported user accessible parts on 27" iMacs are RAM; if you make any modifications, you will void your warranty (which is not a really good idea). If you don't care about the warranty or it has expired, check out ifixit.com - they're a good source for this type of thing; as the machine is brand new, I don't think there would be many people here having attempted this at this point.

FWIW, anyone who is going through all the trouble and hassle

and warranty issues of putting a an HDD inside of an late model

iMac is going through a lot more trouble than it is worth. Both

USB3 and Thunderbolt connections will realize the full speed of

any spinning HDD. A direct internal connection to the SATA bus

won't be any faster as the spinning HDD itself is the limiting

factor.

It actually doesent matter if you put a external ir onternal drive, BUT i didnt want more crap and cables on my desktop.

Changed from PC to MAC because i was tired of all the junk lying around. Thats why i put it inside, and i was just sharing my experience to other who have the same questions.

AND about the warranty, i dont care about that. If the computer works flawlessly for five months, it will survive a few more years (I hope 🙂).
