using gmail.com versus me.com for CALENDAR sync?

i've been a little sloppy with my calendars and seem to have one on a gmail account and one on a me.com account and i don't really understand the difference between the two.

am i correct in assuming they are basically the same but that i can access my gmail calendar from google services and simply sync this to iCal whereas if i use the me.com sync i am only on mac ecosystem?

or how does this work exactly? i mean, i have an iphone, desktop and laptop. if i want to use gmail do i set MAC MAIL to sync using just my GMAIL account and not me.com account?

i am finding this very confusing probably for some very good and some not so good reasons...

thanks for any help

hi Csound1. thank you.

can i ask you this? if i am going to discontinue my use of an old gmail account or i want to have all my information on a new GMail account am i correct in thinking that i can /export/ all my .ics files while i have EACH ONE of these accounts on one at a time (i /think/ i may actually have information on a me.com and a gmail account) and then IMPORT these ics files into iCal when i have the NEW GMail account ONLY on in iCal?

i mean, if i want to retain data that may have existed on a me.com account and a GMail account can i get it OVER to the new account like this?

sorry if that is confusing but it is a bit of a mess that i would like to clean up....

hi CSound can you help me a bit more here please?

so far i have figured out that i need to export the INDIVIDUAL ics files from under each email account. if i export as an archive and select the new email account as enabled with the others disabled - iCal just repopulates my old calendar with the old accounts as well. so what i have done is to export the individual ics files, turned off all the old accounts and then imported the individual calendars.

so some questions:

1. do you know if there is a way to get rid of the CalDav listings in Calendar > Preferences > Accounts? i have like four listed here with 3 being various GMail accounts and one being a me.com account. ALSO, are these basically showing up because i have these email accounts hooked up in MAIL and mail is basically telling calendar that /if/ i wanted to sync these i could?

2. i am getting a "the server responded with an error: the URL https://calendar.google.com/calendar/dav/MyNAME@gmail.com/user///calendar.google.com/calendar/dav/MyNAME@gmail.com/user/ encountered HTTP error 404. make sure the URL is correct. is this something to do with my Gmail account and not having set up a calendar or something? i am feeling like trying to do this through iCal is going about it backwards but i am not sure since i don't understand Gmail very well cause i can't stand the UI.

3. is it possible to go in and DELETE old appointments from the various accounts so i don't get confused in the future? do you think this would be a good idea assuming i can do this to clean things up?

THANKS

Delete them as you would any other account, using the minus sign under the list of accounts.

Go here and follow instructions, it will give you a URL to insert, one that works.

THANKS

Once you delete the accounts the appointments will be gone.

hey man. can i take these one by one?

do you know how i get to a google calendar? i feel like an idiot but i can't tell the difference between an "old" google account and now i seem to get logged into some newfangled google + UI which is making me crazy.

also, on the URL error. i am getting this "in" iCal and i am thinking that Google does not have a calendar set up for some reason. do you know what i mean? i mean, the fact that i /imported/ data into iCal from my other accounts - and into my new GMail address listed in iCal doesn't necessarily mean that i already have a Google Calendar. i mean, i don't know if i have a google calendar and the fact that i am putting this info into a "synced" GMail address while in iCal seems a bit weird.

ALSO, i am getting a error from the link you mentioned. it seems to indicate that the URL is not a iCLOUD CALENDAR link which is in fact the case since i am getting an error in iCal about the GOOGLE CALENDAR address.

i feel like a total dope so i am hoping you can bail me out on this one...
