Screen saver problem. Yosemite

Help please. I keep having to go back into Screen Saver to reselect the iphoto album I want it to run. It works for a few cycles, or sometimes only once, then switches back to National Geographic slides. Grr.

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost

In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be several such files. Move them all to the Trash.

Log out or restart the computer. Test. If the problem is resolved, empty the Trash and recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab.

I first found the National Geographic folder by searching for it in Finder (Command F). The National Geographic folder was the first item in the list that pops up (if you click on the National Geographic folder in the finder results, at the bottom of that window it should say the Nat Geo folder is located in the Default Collections folder). Then I double clicked on the National Geographic folder itself, to open it, highlighted all the images within that folder, then dragged them to the Trash.

At that stage the computer asked for my Admin password, which I provided.

Next, I highlighted all the photos I wanted to use (about 250 of them) and dragged/copied them in the National Geographic folder, while also holding down the Option key, so they are copies. Again, the computer asked for my Admin password.

And that was it.

Back at the "Desktop and Screensaver" preferences pane, I then made sure the National Geographic folder was selected as the one I wanted to use. I also clicked the "Shuffle" option.

As a quick test run, I then set the screen saver to start working every 2 minutes, then over the next few minutes I noticed it worked well every time. Today (the day after the initial fix) the new screensaver is still working fine. I have now reset the screensaver back to chime in after 10 minutes, and it's still working fine. Hope this helps.

The problem seems to be that by default the plist file for ScreenSaverPhotoChooser always has the NatGeo path in it, regardless if you choose a different file path for it to use or not in System Preferences. When your screen saver loads in due to inactivity is converts this file (with your specific options that you've selected) as a temporary file and displays your pictures. When you wake up the computer (after any length) it removes the file it converted to a temporary file and replaces it with a blank ScreenSaverPhotoChooser, which then loads default values when your screen saver kicks on again.

Apple should be able to fix this by changing the code so it copies the file to a temporary file to load the screen saver, rather than renaming it.

I tried JamieJuno's approach and was able to move the Nat Geo photos to the trash. However, when I tried to move my photos (from Photos) into that folder (whether trying one or thousands) I got this message: DSC_1283.JPG couldn't be copied because you don't have permission to access 1-National Geographic. If I tried moving them without holding down "Option," then I got the message: Could not write file to destination (1,016)

Any further advice?

Just replying to myself here... I think I finally got it to work. I thought that maybe the "1" in the National Geographic folder name was responsible for making it the default, so I changed the name of that folder to "5-National Geographic" and then created a new folder called "1-Family photos". Then I moved some photos into the new folder (each step requiring administrator's permission, as JamieJuno said). That did not work. But then, I renamed the NatGeo folder back to its original name and for some reason, I was able to slide the photos from "1-Family photos" into "1-National Geographic" which I had not previously been allowed to do, and voila! Finally have my slide show back!

Hope that helps someone.
