Filevault Yosemite stalled and won't continue??

My mid 2012 MBP retina is in paused mode of encryption in FileVault.


I thought it might be a good idea to use this with all the horror stories you hear about stolen laptops but better to be stolen than use FileVault IMHO :-).


It has been in encrypting mode since the day Yosemite was released...I just realized it today and it now shows Encryption paused. When I try to turn off FileVault, the message says to wait until the disk is fully encrypted before turning it off. I searched for info in this group and the best idea I could find was to reset PRAM - which I did and it went to a screen that said "encrypting - estimating time remaining" to a screen that said to plug in to power adapter (which I already was plugged in to ((tested to be working by unplugging and replugging and screen brightness changed)).


Looks like the proverbial catch 22 to me at this point and I'm stuck...any advice appreciated.

Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. Then, from the menu bar, select

File ▹ Turn Off Encryption

Enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.

You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.

It took me this long to make a fresh backup...


I've followed your instructions but when I get to the TURN OFF ENCRYPTION part, I am not asked for a password - possibly because the file vault was never activated? At least I don't think it has totally completed the encryption (the "fill" line was very very near the end). I restarted and peaked at the FileVault dialog...it still is asking to be connected to power adapter to resume encryption. The computer does not seem to be suffering in performance at all. I will leave the system running hoping I am wrong, but it seems that nothing is taking place.

Thanks for staying on this for me.


No love. I did the SMC reset and no change


Just to retest the previous question on charging, I ran the battery down a bit and rechecked and the power shows Connected yes and Charging yes.


I've played with some scenarios of restarting with charger not connected and checked status of FileVault - when restarted and not connected to power it just shows the encryption paused but grayed out. When I plug in the power it goes to a blue line but no change in the message.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

The encryption process is paused. I don't know why. It seems to be a bug. If you can't get decryption started as I suggested in my first comment, you'll have to wipe the volume and restore from a backup. If you can connect the drive to a computer running Windows or a version of OS X older than 10.7, erase it that way. Otherwise see this thread.

Oh my...


Think I'll procrastinate on that... It would seem that there have been enough instances of this that Apple may have a fix?


The backup I made last night overwrought earlier ones...I don't back up the MBP daily like I do my iMac. No data is in danger but what a mess to have to reinstall everything and remember which apps need deactivation like photoshop etc.


Thanks so much for your help. Since the machine seems to run fine except that I'm forced to login manually, I don't see any downside to waiting till Apple steps up or I have a 2-3 window I can spare using the laptop in (just in case it takes a lot longer than I hoped).

Just thought I owed you a final update. I finally gave in and wiped my HD and reinstalled Yosemite without restoring anything, turned off FileVault, and then restored files from Time Machine. Couldn't find any solution that worked (including a half hour session with Applecare).


This is always scary but I had two backups and it was actually pretty easy and the actual time spent working on it is trivial ... Except for the waiting :-)
