OS X Yosemite Keeps Crashing To Log-In Screen

Hi

I had previously been using the OS X Yosemite Beta and upgraded to the full version, but I have had nothing but problems with it. My MacBook Air keeps crashing back to the log-in screen. It happens in numerous ways - I could be opening an app, closing an app, reducing an app, or saving a document (etc) and then the screen flickers and goes back to the log-in screen.

I am running:

OS X Yosemite 10.10

1.7 GHz Intel Core i7

8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

500GB Storage

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Apple just asked me to verify my bug report that I have filed on Dec 16 2014. They wrote:

We believe this issue has been addressed in OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 GM.
Please test with this release, and update this report with your results.

I have closed the bug, because I did not encounter a crash for couple of months now. At least it is nice to see, that someone saw the bug.

It is funny how many clicks one needs to get to the last page of this thread.

They asked you to verify the bug report by testing with this release. Don’t you think it would be prudent to leave the bug report open until you get some feedback? I’ve had a few crashes to the login screen since updating to 10.10.3 as well.

Personally, I think it’s a hardware issue, and my best guess is the video chipset. Perhaps after each report, all users could list their basic hardware.

So I think I have manged to get my Mac mini usable. I pretty much had to do what most people did to resolve the issue, reinstall until it stopped happening. Its been about 3 days since my last install of the OS and it hasn't happened again. I think the only thing I did different the last install was I had it download the OS from the net instead of doing the install from the local drive.

Now all I need to do is fix that stupid terminal bug(The one where it gets stuck at logging in).

I have this bug too. Yosemite is crashing/freezing randomly since the first 10.0 release and by the way this was a while ago!. And to all IT IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE! I have testet this on 2 different MacBook Pro's. I created a 100% bit clone of a the freezing Yosemite hard drive. On the second MacBook Pro the SAME! With 10.9.x everything is fine! No log entry, no resolution? It is also NOT a problem to have wrong file access rights or similar. It is more a SOFTWARE BUG with the BROWSER ENGINE/LIBRARY. Sometimes I cannot open a URL, because Yosemite is freezing on this URL. Sometimes I cannot open an HTML email with Microsoft Outlook 2011 because Yosemite is freezing on this email. Maybe it is App Nap too. I don't know.

Your OS may be corrupt. I hate to say this, but it happens often. To fix this, turn off your mac and wait 10 seconds after the white spinny wheel goes away (On the black screen during the shut down process). After it shuts off entirely, press and hold the "Command" and "R" keys and press the power button. Do NOT let go of the "Command" or "R" keys until you see the Apple logo on your screen!!! By doing this, you Mac will boot into it's recovery partition. Once you boot into the recovery partition, click on the disk utility option. Once in disk utility, press "Verify Disk." If you see any red text/it tells you to click repair disk...

Option 1. (Suggested) Reboot into OS X, back up your data, reboot into the recovery partition, and re-install OS X. You will lose all data unless you backed it up!

Option 2. Back up your data (for safety... 🙂) Click "Repair Disk," and wait for it to finish. I cannot say if you will lose any data or not, but I would back it up just to be safe!!!

If you didn't get any red text, CONGRATS! Your mac isn't corrupt and there isn't a need to do anything else in OS X recovery. Reboot, and share your experience here in the fourms.

Good Luck!
