OS X Yosemite Keeps Crashing To Log-In Screen

Hi

I had previously been using the OS X Yosemite Beta and upgraded to the full version, but I have had nothing but problems with it. My MacBook Air keeps crashing back to the log-in screen. It happens in numerous ways - I could be opening an app, closing an app, reducing an app, or saving a document (etc) and then the screen flickers and goes back to the log-in screen.

I am running:

OS X Yosemite 10.10

1.7 GHz Intel Core i7

8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

500GB Storage

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

After installing El Capitan 10.11.1 I had a lot of problem with kexts, as the one I couldn't boot the mac, after cleaning the extensions I can't reproduce the crash thing anymore, since then (10.11.1 release date), before I was able almost every time I wanted it.

Its obvious the problem is different for everyone, all we have different ways to trigger the "login screen of death", and I can't say if cleaning the extensions or the 10.11.1 update was what solved the problem in my particular scenario because it was at the same time, it always happened when switching users.

Cross fingers it stays this way long time...

I Have the same issue, my Yosemite MBA switching back to login screen again and again frequently, very pronounced when I have a longer program downloads! like the latest upgrade to the OS X El Captain and other major software from Apple.

However, if I do not miss the warning pop up that gives me a choice to Cancel or allow this switch, I can prevent my MBA of turning back so frequently to the login screen. I chat with Apple Store online, they were not able to help me so far. Then I met a Genius Bar rep in my local Apple Store reporting about this persistent issue. He perform all possible hardware and software tests - and did not found any issue? I left my MBA in the store for more tests...

IN addition to the all tests that Apple Store rep did, we also checked the Energy Saver option and System Preferences - nothing was found that should hint why my MBA frequently in relatively short few minutes is trying to switch back to the login screen. I experienced this issue while running Yosemite, but most recently I upgraded to El Captain and wondering whether this persistent serious issue will start bothering all over? I'll report back when know the answer. So far I left my MBA for further tests with my local Apple Store.

TThe 5 min return to the login screen with my MBA was an incidental Apple setting before the delivery of the laptop. Went to Security. Clicked on the padlock, entered my login and then click on Advanced. The open window-menu was hiding this setting which was crashing my MBA back to login screen. Simply uncheck the field showing this short time after which the notebook was logging off on regular basis. Check whether this will help you.

I was suffering from this on El Capitan. It was driving me crazy. Just when I did something memory- or processor-intensive, the screen would start flickering in bands and would throw me back to the logon screen shortly afterwards. I lost a lot of work over a period of several weeks.

About a week ago, I made several changes at the same time (I know, I know, not good problem determination, but I was getting desperate) and it's now stopped. So I've narrowed it down to 4 things in my case (but I think it was probably number 4):

  1. I removed one of my fave apps, jitouch;
  2. In Preferences > General, I unchecked Use dark menu bar and Dock
  3. Preferences > Accessibility, I unchecked Reduce Transparency
  4. (Almost certainly the cuprit) I had previously converted (with PST Converter Pro from the app store) tons of email archives from the last 15 years and imported them in Apple Mail (I previously had these in local .pst files, to use with MS Outlook/Exchange). I deleted them from Mail about a week ago, around when the problem stopped (sorry I can't be more precise; my reason for deleting them was not to solve this problem, but because I got tired of Mail's search picking up old stuff that I didn't need every time).

I have not been bounced to the logon screen since doing all of these things. I think that the issue was almost certainly related to a massive volume of emails and one of Mail/Spotlight/Finder was having a fit trying to keep track of them all.

When I have time, I'll re-enable 1, 2, and 3 (I'll post back if the problem re-occurs as a result), but I'll leave the emails out of Mail for now. I've lost so much productivity over the last couple of months that I don't want to risk this re-occuring.
