use airport extreme A1354 to provide wired connection

I just purchased a time capsule. It replaced an airport extreme A1354.

In another room of my home I have an older blu ray disc player that requires a hard wire ethernet connection for the internet (not wireless capable).

I tried to reset my A1354 following the instruction on the apple website and then add it to my wireless network so that I could place it in that room where the blu ray is, hoping that it could provide the required wired ethernet connection.

However, when I open airport utility it sees the A1354, and then is able to see my wireless network, but when it attempts to connect I receive a message "an unexpected error occurred"

Can what I am attempting be accomplished?

Thank you

Hello,

I have followed all your directions as I too am wanting the same extension. I completed all the steps including the Done step. The light is green on the Airport Extreme. On my iPhone and iPad, the network does not appear as an option. I then followed your ethernet cable suggestion, and that works fine. Why doesn't the wifi function on iDevices or Macbook pro?

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

On my iPhone and iPad, the network does not appear as an option.

You are asking about an "extended" network. The "extended" part of the network uses the same wireless network name and password as the "main" part of the network......so a wireless device will only "see" one network, even though it might be being broadcast by more than one device.

All that you should need to do when you move the iPhone or iPad near the extended AirPort is this:

Tap Settings on the Home Screen

Tap Wi-Fi

Tap to turn off the Wi-Fi

Wait a few seconds

Turn the Wi-Fi back on

That will force the iPhone or iPad to look for a wireless signal and it will pick up the stronger signal from the closer AirPort.

When you move the iPhone and iPad back to the "main" area, do the same thing again so the devices will pick up the strongest signal from the "main" AirPort.

A Mac laptop will automatically "switch" to pick up the strongest signal as it moves from one area to another, so no need to treat the Mac laptop like an iOS device.

That's interesting as up until when my TC disappeared from my MBP desktop, I always had the choice of two networks with two distinct names and passwords. Why did Airport Utility ask me to name the network and give a password when I set it up a couple of hours ago?

I was preferring to have two separate networks as one is for my rental.

Thanks for the information and the detailed steps you posted to help the previous person.

Unfortunately, now things are degrading to the point where there is confusion between different sets of instructions and what you may or may not have done...along with things that the Apple software may have done as a default.

Would really be best to start a new post......with details on the following:

The model of your "main" AirPort

The model of the "extending" AirPort

How you will connect the AirPorts together....wired or wireless

What operating system you are using

Finally, exactly what you want to do.....and "extended" or "big" network with the same name and password......or.....a second network, that will require a separate log on when you want to connect to the network.

Extending airport extreme FDO31LL/A Model A1408

wireless connection between the two

I would like the extended to be a network with separate login and password as it is a vacation rental.

Thanks for your help and Happy Holidays.

I would like the extended to be a network with separate login and password as it is a vacation rental.

Sorry, but that goal can only be met if you connect the AirPort Extreme to the Time Capsule using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.

It's not possible to have the Extreme connect using wireless and use a different wireless network name and password as the main network.

Power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes

Hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort Extreme for 10 seconds and release

Allow a full minute for the Exterme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light

On the Mac....open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

Click on Other WiFi Devices

Click on AirPort Extreme

The utility will open up and suggest the correct setup. Enter a name that you want to call the AirPort Extreme and click Next

Wait another minute for the message of Setup Complete, then click Done. That's it.
