Came back to my iMac last night with it's display facing down. Upon trying to put it straight I notice the hinge being completely limp. Also, a slight grinding sound when moving the display. Looks to some sort of construction failure. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
You will need to take it to an Apple Store or AASP to be repaired. Ask the store manager to see if Apple will cover it as a warranty issue.

I have the same problem. @7 inch , late 2012, just screen went down flat. And its i quite a repair if you google the process.
Apple is repairing mine outside of warranty. They recognize is as a construction fault... Give them a call...

The grinding / aluminum friction sound while moving the display is from the power cable, since the power cable is heavy and coarse it makes friction with loop of the aluminum stand. Simple 😉
Nope, it was a coil from a broken hinge, grinding against the inside of my broken Mac. It was a known factory defect and was repaired at no cost.
I'm not bothered by the sound of a power cable. 😉
My iMac 27 hinge (late 2012) seems to have 'broken', anyone else have this problem?
