Cannot send e-mail

Hi

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite a couple of days ago and today my e-mail stopped working. I have a POP account and use a Plusnet account. I've managed to restore the incoming e-mail but continue to not be able to send e-mail.

I've searched through the Apple support forum and other internet forum and have tried some of the suggestions for dealing with Mail issues such as disabling the automatic detect and maintain account settings options and have allowed insecure authentication. I have also spoken to my e-mail/internet provider and they could not resolve the issue on their end.

I'm using port 587 (which the e-mail provider confirms is correct), have unchecked SSL and the e-mail and account details all seem fine.

Could anyone suggest anything that might get sending e-mails using Mail working again? Should I revert to Mavericks (if this is possible) where I had no problems with Mail?

Many thanks

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Hi Linc

Thanks for coming back on this. I did try to send a message - to myself - and that's all that showed up the the log. I just tried to re-send an e-mail (without success) and the log details are the same, I think:

Hi Linc

I'm very surprised by this answer and I have passed your conclusion to my e-mail provider for their comment and to see if there is a solution here. Can I ask how you have come up with this conclusion? What part of the information I provided suggests that the servers are insecure? Why would upgrading to Yosemite suddenly cause this?

I'm keen not to have to change provider or use a different e-mail application. It would be nice if Apple could stick to their ethos of 'it just works'!

Thanks

There was a huge problem with this when Apple changed the OS to lion. I have the same issue with Yosemite now. I can send and receive from the server and all the setting are correct with my ISP. There is another thread that I cannot find that is offering solutions. I had the problem 2 weeks ago and unchecked automatically check and maintain box, save and mail started working. It has just stopped working again, right now. My port is 587....some have changed the port to 25. This is an Apple issue and they refuse to help the people; it is hit or miss. When Lion came out there were 15,000 posts on this same issue and now it is back again.

Have spent this evening w Apple Support working on what has caused the SMTP servers on all my email accounts to GO OFFLINE, despite me deleting and re-entering all email accounts into Yosemite Apple Mail.

Yosemite Apple Mail/Preferences/Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)/Click Hold/Edit SMTP Server List/:

See the check box “Automatically detect and maintain account settings” Apple is messing w the Yosemite system setting software to automatically configure all email settings, and further, eliminating email settings for only iCloud messaging.

But Yosemite isn’t getting it right. So one must delete all SMTP servers in this specific window, and add them back, providing addresses and passwords as needed.

After upgrading to Yosemite, I have been unable to use Apple Mail, no matter how many times I DELETE email accounts and re-enter them, plus passwords. Because I was ONLY DELETING IMAP servers. In Yosemite, SMTP servers must be deleted specifically from the above window.

Once I deleted the SMTP servers, then added them back, and rebooted my Yosemite system, Yosemite Apple Mail worked. I can send and receive just like in Mavericks.

Maybe someday APPLE auto configured email will work, or iCloud mail will work automatically, but it’s not there yet.

I don't have any where near the amount of knowledge you have from reading your posts. That said, this is an Apple problem and it seems to happen every time they change their operating system. My server is secure. I am just trying to use logic here....if the problem is as you stated, I would never be able to send e=mail ever. I never have a problem until Apple changes the OS

Hi David - I found this thread when I was looking for an answer to the same problem: am with Plusnet and have just done a clean install of Yosemite.

I have several plusnet addresses and the smtp server stayed offline for all of them until, finally, I set up my main account, the one that's myusername@myusername.plus.com. I think that, because all the plusnet addresses use the main account's username and password for smtp, they were blocked from sending until the main account was set up.

Under smtp account information, I have 'plusnet' for description (tho' I don't think it matters what you put there), relay.plus.net for Server Name & None for TLS Cert. In Advanced, 'Automatically detect...' is ticked which puts 25 into the Port box. Use SSL is not ticked. Authentication is Password, username is the main account's username and Password is the main account's password.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Linc

I relayed your comments to my internet/e-mail provider, plusnet, to get their comments and they disagree that this is an issue on their side. They point out that whilst their servers are not currently on SSL, Mail has an option to exclude this (which is unchecked for me) and they are confused as to why there would be no problems for incoming e-mails which use the same supposedly insecure servers.

In any case there appears to be no solution to this issue which leaves me questioning whether I need to rethink my computer needs.

Thanks for attempting to find a solution. Perhaps a Yosemite update might help

Hi

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I've tried all of these suggestions on more than one occasion and, unfortunately, for me this does not resolve the issue. I've even had my internet provider remote in to try to resolve the issue and they couldn't work out why there was a problem either. I can only assume there is some weird incompatibility bug going on.

Very annoying but I'm sure I'll find a way around this at some point!

Having manually deleted and re-entered the SMTP servers and passwords on all three accounts in Yosemite Apple Mail, Mail works beautifully today. You cannot simply delete the email accounts and renter them, because it only deletes the IMAP servers. You must manually delete the SMTP servers and re-enter them plus passwords. Worked for me in Yosemite 10.10.

Hi Linc

I take your point and obviously the decision to use this e-mail provider is mine. However, assuming I am happy to use this internet provider (one of the largest in the UK, by the way) given that Apple have provided an option not to use SSL for STMP servers, I still don't understand why I get an issue if I unselect SSL.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

David
