yosemite upgrade problems

I've recently upgraded to Yosemite, and since then have been experiencing downgraded performance on my MacAir. Slowness, freezing, delayed response when trying to "wake up", memory problems (can't open multiple apps at same time without getting a warning), etc.

As per advice from this community, I "repaired disk permissions" and "repaired disk" in Disk Utilities, I reset the System Management Controller (SMC), and I reset the PRAM. I also removed all non-compatible software, cleaned it of 3rd party apps (including Genieo), and updated all out-dated software. Yet I'm not noticing any changes. Still get memory problems (e.g., tells me it can't save a document because too many files are open, when it's the only one open!), Excel and Skype randomly freeze, start-up is slow, sometimes the monitor won't "wake up" immediately when I touch a key, and I can't manage to get "save as" to work without the screen flashing and the whole computer freaking out!

Below is my Etresoft report. Any advice on what to do?

Thanks!

Problem description:

Slow operations, freezing applications, delayed monitor “wake-up”, etc. following upgrade to Yosemite.

The first thing to do is to get rid of MacKeeper! There are many posts out on Apple Support Community about the harm MacKeeper can cause, and how to go about removing it.

You should do this immediately and unconditionally.

The next thing to consider would be to use Safari instead of Google Chrome. Chrome has the reputation of being a resource hog.

As others have said you need to remove MacKeeper and Genieo, but you also have installed Spigot adware, so I must encourage you to use AdwareMedic to remove all currently known adware fast and efficiently. The developer is a well known malware guru here in the forum and a colleague of mine.

To understand why this is happening to you you and how to avoid it in the future, see John Galt's How to install adware.

Oh, and I see you have a lot of lost login items listed.

  • iyogi-scc-20140618-153458 UNKNOWN (missing value)
  • Genieo UNKNOWN (missing value)

Go to System Preferences->Users & Groups->Login Items tab and use the minus "-" button to remove them, then replace any that you feel still need to be opened when you log in.

MacKeeper is the single worst thing you can do to your mac.

The best thing you can do to MacKeeper is delete it and NEVR install it again !

Do This in the order it appears

1) Delete the contents of the following Folders

MacHD/System/Library/Caches

MacHD/Library/Caches

home/Library/Caches

home/Library/Saved Application State

Then

1)Reboot with shift held while booting...

2) Login

Then

1) Reboot with alt+cmd+p+r - pressed until you hear start chime twice...

2) Log in and see if problem is gone.

Good question ... I don't know.

I do know that Safari uses iCloud bookmarks, so you can at least access bookmarks from all your Apple devices. (I personally do not use this feature.)

I suspect you can also get at your Safari bookmarks on non-Apple devices using their browser to point to http://www.icloud.com.

This old thread makes me think this approach works:

Importing iCloud bookmarks to Safari PC?

DONE - MacKeeper gone! But have to admit I'm sad to remove it after I paid so much money for it. Now I know to come here first in the future, before upgrading or downloading anything! Thx.

How can I get rid of the SAFARI extensions that show in the report? They don't appear listed in Safari itself when I open the app and go to settings.
