Symbolic link w/ iCloud Drive
Hello people,
Does any of you know if the sym links work in iCloud drive? If yes, do they also work in app containers like Pages or Numbers?
Thanks
Hello people,

I just tried and it doesn't seem to work. I symlinked a folder and placed the link in the icloud drive root. When visiting icloud.com and checking iCloud drive there, not even the folder (without contents) shows up. Also placing the symlink in subdirectories results in the same behaviour.
It works the opposite way round: you need the original file in iCloud Drive and the symlink in the folder the original file came from.
MacDropAny provides a quick and easy way to do this < http://www.zibity.com/macdropany.html >. It works for a number of cloud services and automatically puts the symlinks whichever way round the service requires. It isn't currently configured to handle iCloud Drive specifically, but its blog includes a quick and easy interim workround < http://www.zibity.com/blog/interim-icloud-drive-sync-how-to >.
I'll give this a try and report back later. Thank you!
I tried the MacDropAny and it seems at this time it got updated for iCloudDrive. Problem is when you choose iCloud drive, the app redirects you to another app from the same developer, apparently written specifically for iCloud drive called "iClouDrive", and this app it seems not to work after installing and running it.
UPDATE: MacDropAny seems to accept after all iCloud drive linkage but it doesn't seem the changes propagate.
For example, if the source is in iCloud drive (original) and the sym link is in Documents folder stored locally (for example) it only syncs at the date of creation. If you modify something from the local file it doesn't propagate into iCloud drive ON OTHER DEVICES. It only propagates on icloud drive locally (if that makes sense) or on the same machine.
Moreover: the file count in folder Example on local and iCloud drive is 82, on another machine the file count is 65. Weird....
A solution to create a symlink of one of your folder on your hardrive to IcloudDrive :
in the Terminal type :
ln -s ~/Documents ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs
The first part is the folder you want to symlink, the second its location on Icloud Drive (you can do it reversely I guess.
While that may work "technically", it won't work in the way the OP asked.
I tried to open numbers documents that were symlinked (and aliased) from my documents folder to iCloud drive, but numbers on IOS will not pick it up.
RichardJones22 suggestion of "the original file in iCloud Drive and the symlink in the folder the original file came from" seems to be the only way to have both worlds in this case.
Odd - I've not had that problem. The only thing I can think of, but it seems unlikely, is that the file in question is from an app that is switched off in iCloud Preferences on the second device.
UPDATE: After a few hours the changes fully propagates. One simply couldn't tell the status of the iCloud Drive upload and hence my mystery. It seems now all is fine and the sym link works.
