5th gen ipod won't connect to usb 3, is there a fix?

I have an ipod video (5th gen), and it won't connect to my new asus laptop since it only has usb 3 ports (I don't care if it will charge or not, I have a dock), my question is whether it could potentially connect to my computer so I could sync it if I use a usb 2 hub or something similar. My ipod recently formatted itself when it forced a reset, so I have to get my music all back. Anyone know a fix to it? Thanks for any help you guys can give me, really driving me crazy not having music to listen to when I'm out...

I think USB 3.0 should (normally) work, since it is generally backwards compatible. What happens when you try to connect it? How does it "not connect"?

Some recent PCs with USB 3.0 seem to have an energy-saver "feature" that reduces power to USB ports when the connected device is considered "not active." In case something like that is affecting the connection to the iPod, you can look at Control Panels for a setting that disables such a feature. Also, make sure the laptop's power adapter is connected, so that it is not running on battery power when connecting the iPod.

You could try a USB 2.0 hub, as long as it is self-powered (has its own power supply).

When I plug in the usb to my laptop it recognizes that the usb is connected, but doesn't recognize that anything is connected to the usb, so it just lists it as a usb device, unable to recognize the ipod itself. Sadly the energy saver option is disabled when plugged in on my laptop (which it always is unless I'm traveling or making food). I guess I'll try getting a usb 2.0 hub online and seeing if that works. Hopefully its not my ipod having gotten too old, works fine even after 5 years, but then this happened when I switched computers.
(Also, even windows troubleshoot diagnosed it as not being able to recognize usb 3.0, so I really hope my ipod isn't too outdated to use now...)

You did install the latest version of iTunes on your new computer, correct? Installing iTunes is how the software needed for iPods to be recognized as iPod gets installed. Otherwise, Windows sees it as a generic device.

If the iPod is recognized by Windows, but not iTunes, you should go through this trouble-shooting document.

iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes - Apple Support

FYI - My 3rd gen iPod from 2003 works fine with the latest iTunes; there's no such thing as an iPod that is too old. 🙂

Sweet, the ipod apple support link gave me the info to do a disk mode without itunes, from there I formatted the ipod, itunes recognized it as corrupt, then restored it. Now it's good as new!

Not sure why windows thought it was a usb 3.0 issue, but either way, fixed now finally.

Thanks alot man, been going crazy without my music, might take a while to get it all back on, but saved my ipod~

Hope you have a good one, really appreciate the help with this.
